For more information contact Aaron Dewees at 755-5135. --- Attention Hunters: There will be Hunter Safety Education classes held on Tuesday September 7th, Thursday September 9th, and Saturday September 11th at the Nishna Bend Recreation Area. In order to purchase an Iowa hunting license, hunters must have a certificate showing they have completed a hunter education course and to get the hunter education certificate you must attend all three days. Hunters aged twelve years and older must call Iowa Western Community College at 712-755-3568 to pre-register and receive books in advance to be admitted. This will be the only hunter safety education class offered in Shelby County this year. --- Permits are available for deer hunting at Boyer Chute National Wildlife Refuge for three antler less deer hunts. The hunts are muzzleloader only. The hunt dates are October 23-24, November 20-21, and December 18-19. The tickets can be purchased online or at any Nebraska Game and Parks Commission permits offices. More information can be found by calling 402-468-4313. --- Iowa Western Community College will be holding the Shelby County Women's Conference from 4-8:30 pm on Monday, September 13th at the Therkildsen Center in Harlan. Registration is $25 per person. To register call 755-3568 or mail the payment to the Iowa Western Community College Shelby County Center by Wednesday September 8th. Make checks payable to Shelby County Women's Conference. --- Saturday, September 4th The Des Moines Renaissance Faire is taking place from September 4-6th. There will be many events including three full contact jousts daily, over 300 costumed characters, fifty merchants and food vendors, over 100 daily performances, and plenty more entertainment for the entire family! The Harlan Fire Department will be holding "Fill The Boot" for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Saturday September 4th and Sunday September 5th in the Hy-Vee parking lot! The Hoo Doo Days Celebration in Neola continues with a Teen Street Dance on Saturday evening on 4th Street. Great music and great fun for those teens 13 and older. The Abraham Lincoln Cross Country Invite will be held at 9am at the Iowa Western Campus in Council Bluffs. Friday, September 10th The Cass County Conservation Board is holding a "Mysterious Monarchs" program. The public program will be held at the Campground Shelter at Cocklin Fish Farm Park in Griswold on September 10th, 2010 at 7pm. Discovering and tagging the monarchs before they travel south is a free event and fun for the whole family. The Harlan Senior Center will be hosting crafts at 9 am and exercise time at 10:30 am. Saturday, September 11th The Shelby County Community Outreach "Golf Anyone?" 4th annual golf FUNdraiser will be held on Saturday September 11th at the Shelby County Golf Course north of Harlan. Registration forms are available and can be downloaded from the Shelby County Community Outreach website www.scco-inc.org. The Des Moines Renaissance Faire is taking place from September 11-12th. The 28th annual Carstens Farm Days in Shelby will be celebrated on Saturday September 11th and Sunday September 12th with a variety of activities each day! The Cord McCoy PBR Challenge Rodeo will be held on September 11th a the Cass County Fair Grounds. Tickets can be purchased at the Cass County Extension Office, Weirich Welding Plus in Lewis, R&B Feeds in Atlantic, KSOM 9605 in Atlantic, KJAN 1220 in Atlantic, KCSI 95.3 in Red Oak, and Stage 2 in Exira. All proceeds from the event support the Cass County Fair. The Red Oak Business and Professional Women will be hosting a fall craft show on Saturday September 11th from 9 am - 3 pm at the Gold Fair Building on 4th Street in Red Oak. Admission is 50 cents per person. Sunday, September 12th The Nathaniel Hamlin Park Fall Festival is running from 10am-4pm. The Irwin United Methodist Church is having their Lord's Portion Supper and Sale on September 15th. They will be serving chicken noodle and vegetable beef soup and homemade pie. Serving begins at 5pm and there is a "Free Will Offering". The auction will be held following supper. The Harlan Senior Center will be hosting blood pressure checks from 11:15 - noon. Friday, September 17th The Harlan Senior Center will be hosting crafts at 9 am and exercise time at 10:30 am. Saturday, September 18th The Alzheimer's Assocation Memory Walk is taking place on September 18th at 9am at Pioneer Park. Memory Walk is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support, and research. The Des Moines Renaissance Faire is taking place from September 18-19th. There will be many events including three full contact jousts daily, over 300 costumed characters, fifty merchants and food vendors, over 100 daily performances, and plenty more entertainment for the entire family! There will be a Fall Vendor Fair on September 18th from 9am-1pm at the Corley Community Hall. There will be 20 different vendors, admission is only fifty cents, and all proceeds go to benefit the local area MOPS group! The Shelby County Catholic School golf tournament will be held on September 18th at the Rosman Glendale Golf Course. Starting time is 10am with a shotgun tee off. The entry fee is $60 which includes the 4-person best ball game, steak dinner, and great prizes.
