The Harlan Community High School had a board meeting yesterday. The board carried out several items on the agenda, such as handbook changes, milk and bread bids and propane bids. Two large topics discussed was the sale of the New Park Building. The board approved the sale to Fresh Encounter Fellowship for $35,001. The Fellowship will take ownership on September 1st. The other topic was PPEL and ISL election dates. PPEL stands for Physical Plant and Equipment Levi and ISL stands for Instructional Support Levi. Superintendent Justin Wagner called these “both critical” for the school. These are not new taxes but an extension. The PPEL brings in over $369,000 and the ISL brings in over $728,000 in revenue for the schools. The topic was only discussed at this time.

The Community Health department is about to head into their new building. Earlier, I was on the phone with Vicky Kalaspie, director of the Community Health Department. Vicky informed me on the move, “The Community Health Department…next couple of days here.” I asked Vicky about the space in the new building, “Some of our staff…gonna work out really good for us.” Vicky explained what agencies are in the Community Health Department, “One is home health…HCCMS family planning program.” Vicky finished up with talking about when the new building will be open, “I’m looking…totally in the new place.”

With the Audubon County Fair all wrapped up, the ISU extension office has sent down some results from the judging competitions. In the sheep category, Danielle Bowlin won junior showmanship and Kasey Porsch won Intermediate/Senior Showmanship. The Supreme Champion Market Beef was Danielle Esbeck. The Overall champion Horse was Taylor Nielsen and the Champion Market Hog was Kasey Porsch. Congratulations to all the winners from the Audubon County Fair.

Today marks the beginning of Westfair in Council Bluffs. The day is pretty slow down at Westfair. The horse and pony show begins the day. Tonight, the sheep are entered and weighed. This evening’s activity is the Go Kart/Lawn Mower races starting at 7pm. The Blood mobile is in two local locations today. You can donate blood at the Sacred Heart Church in Manning starting at noon. Dow City is also having the blood mobile at the Dow City Community building from 1 to 6 today. If you do donate, make sure you register online for a chance to win a brand new Ford Fiesta. You can register at www.redcrossracing.com. The later in the week, the bloodmobile will be in Atlantic and Dunlap.

Westfair has kicked off down in Council Bluffs. I spoke to Westfair board president Byron Menke about some of the arena events for this year, “Tonight with Go cart…demo derby.” Byron talked about the Amphitheater schedule, “The Amphitheater is busy…be our feature concert this year.” There will be plenty more events on tap at the Westfair continuing throughout the week and weekend.

East Pottawattamie has sent in all the winners from last weeks East Pot County Fair. Some of the winners were: Champion Pony Alyssa Wyman, Champion Mare Hannah Gehrmann, Overall Goat Showmanship Hunter Nielsen, Grand Champion Market Lamb Travis Henningsen, Grand Champion Market Heifer Colby Sorenesen and Grand Champion Market Steer was Savannah Sorensen. Congratulations to all the winners from the East Pottawattamie Fair and other area fair winners.
