Donations can be made year-round at the West Central Community Action at 516 Market Street in Harlan. Both non-perishable food items and non-food items can be donated. --- The Shelby County Community Outreach is always in need of donated items for families in need within the county. If you have items to donate please call Julianne at 235-7226. --- The Kids Korner hours are Tuesdays from 11 am - 1 pm, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 - 4:30 pm. For more information contact Barb Leinen at 755-4422. --- Iowa Western Community College will be having GED classes every Tuesday from 6:30 - 8:30 pm and every Wednesday from 10 am - 12 pm at the Shelby County Center. --- The Myrtue Medical Center will be holding Understanding Grief which is a six week support and educational program for adults. They will be meeting in Woodbine every Tuesday starting April 6th until May 11th from 9-10:30 am at the Sacred Heart Parish Center room 704. Registration is required by April 1st. For more information call 755-4424. --- Plans are underway for the Shelby County Community Kids Fest to be held at Veteran's Auditorium in Harlan on Saturday, April 10th, from 9-11:30am. Kids Fest is the community health and safety fair for children ages preschool through 5th grade and their families. Any group or organization interested in participation in Kids Fest or donating to this event is encouraged and invited to do so. Please contact the Public Health Office at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan at 755-4422 for more information. --- There will be a benefit dinner for Greg Knudsen and Tom Daniel from 4-8pm on Friday, March 26th at the Abundant Life Church Velocity Center. All you can eat spaghetti dinner with salad, bread, and desert. The price is ten dollars per adult with ticket or twelve dollars at the door and six dollars per children twelve years and younger. Tickets can be purchased at Hansen Brothers, Mickel's, Abundant Life Church office, Midstates Bank, Shelby County State Bank, United Bank of Iowa, Farmers Trust and Savings Bank, Town and Country Credit Union. --- Shelby County Catholic School is Sponsoring a "Go For the Green" raffle drawing. Ticket price is $10 per ticket. Winning ticket will get half of the collected raffle money. The drawing will be held on March 17th. All Proceeds will go to the 2010 General Operating Budget of SCCS. Tickets are available at the school, from SCCS families, and the following local businesses: Farmers Trust and Savings Bank, Shelby County State Bank, Defiance State Bank, and Westphalia Club House. --- St. Michael's Middle School youth will be doing their annual Scavenger hunt on Wednesday, March 10th. The youth will be stopping at houses in the Harlan area from 7:30-8:30 to ask for food donations for the Shelby County Food Pantry. Thank you in advance for your generosity. Tuesday, March 9th IWCC will be hosting Library and Lunch Book Discussion from noon-1pm at the Harlan Community Library. The Senior Center will be having Movie Morning with The Video Place at Hy-Vee at 9:30am. There will also be The Alzheimer's Support Group meeting at 2:30pm. Family planning services for walk-ins are available every Tuesday afternoon from 2-5:30pm. Wednesday, March 10th The Senior Center will be hosting Wii Game Morning at 9am and Bingo starting at 1:15. The Iowa Extension Office in Harlan will be holding a Handlers CIC at 9am. The Mid week lent services for Immanuel and Bethany in Kimbalton, St. Paul in Irwin, and Bethlehem in Jacksonville will be held at the Immanuel Church in stead of the Bethany Church. The meal will begin at 6 pm and services will begin at 7:30. Thursday, March 11th The Senior Center will be having a Senior Council Meeting at 9:30am and Birthday and Anniversary Party blood pressure checks and entertainment by Jan Rau and Father Bob Hoefler starting at 6pm. There will be a MOPS meeting at the Immanuel Lutheran Church from 7-9 pm. If you would like more information about Mothers of Preschoolers call Lynee Metzger at 733-8833. IWCC will be hosting Intro to Computers Accelerated from 8:30am-noon at the Shelby County Center. There will be a Speaker at the Audubon Library starting at 7 pm. The Speaker is Darrel Draper and he will be performing Daniel Freeman: America's First Homesteader. He will tell the humorous and factual account of Americas first homesteader. Friday, March 12th The Senior Center will be hosting Crafts at 9am and exercise time at 10:30am. The Clarinda Gun Show runs from 4-9pm on Friday at the Page County Fairgrounds in Clarinda. Admission is only five dollars. The Shelby County State Bank will be holding a bake sale downtown starting at 8 am. All of the proceeds will go to Relay for Life. The Harlan Drama Department will be performing two plays on Friday. The High school will performing The Old Folks Home after the middle school performs Left in the Wicker Basket or Right Under the Ol' Boarding House Steps starting at 7:30 pm.
Saturday, March 13th The Clarinda Gun Show runs from 9am-5pm t the Page County Fairgrounds in Clarinda. Swine Weigh-in will be from 8-10 am at the fairgrounds. The Harlan Jazz bands will be performing in the Bellevue Jazz Festival in Bellevue, Nebraska. There will be Harlan Speech students participating in the Individual speech contest in Glenwood. Sunday, March 14th The Clarinda Gun Show runs from 9am-3pm at the Page County Fairgrounds in Clarinda. Admission is only five dollars. The Earling Knights of Columbus will be hosting a Pancake Breakfast from 9 am - 12:30 pm in the Westphalia Parish Center. It will be a free will donation and also at 12:30 you can have a chance to join the Earling Knights of Columbus. The Altamont Baptist Church will be having their annual soup supper from 4-7:30. They will be serving Oyster Soup, Chili, and Vegetable Beef Soup, along with sandwiches and bars. A free will offering will be accepted and will go towards their new building fund. Monday, March 15th The Senior Center will be hosting Crafts at 9am. IWCC will be hosting Excel Level 1 classes from 1-3:30pm at the Shelby County Center. Tuesday, March 16th The Senior Center will be hosting exercise time at 9am and the Life After Loss Support Group meeting at 5pm. Family planning clinics are scheduled for today from 11-6:30pm. Wednesday, March 17th The Senior Center will be hosting Wii Game Morning at 9am and Bingo starting at 1:15. There will also be a St Patrick's Day Celebration with Corned Beef and Cabbage, door prizes, and The Blue Notes entertaining starting at 12noon. Tickets will be available by March 15th, call 755-2757 or stop at the center. The Myrtue Medical Center will be selling St. Patricks Day Treat Bags for $2. The bags will consist of one quart filled with green and white Vic's Corn Popper popcorn and green M&Ms. All of the proceeds will go to relay for life. They will be in the Medical Center Cafeteria from 9-11 am. Thursday, March 18th The Senior Center will be hosting 11:15-noon blood pressure checks. IWCC will be hosting Photoshop Elements 8.0 Level 1 from 6-9pm at the Shelby County Center. The 6-weel Powerful Tools for Caregivers classes in Harlan will be held each Thursday, March 18th, through April 22nd from 1:30-4pm at the Therkildsen Center in Harlan. For more information or to register for the upcoming classes please call 755-2757. There is no charge for the classes, however class size is limited. There will be a Speaker at the Audubon Library starting at 7 pm. The Speaker is Cherrie Beam-Clark and she will be performing Promise in a New Land. She will depict a settler between 1845 and 1970 and through a spell bounding rendition the viewers are transported in time. Friday, March 19th The Senior Center will be hosting Crafts at 9am and exercise time at 10:30am. There will be a Shelby County Chamber of Commerce fundraiser and awards event at the Harlan Golf and Country Club. Social hour starts at 5:30 with hors d'oeuvres. Thursday, March 25th The Senior Center will be hosting 6pm meal blood pressure checks and Helen Warren and Grandchildren will entertain. here will be a Speaker at the Audubon Library starting at 7 pm. The Speaker will be from Living History Farms and will explore the rhythms of farm life and those who settled on Iowa's fertile prairies.
