HC Boys’ Track Competing Amongst the Best to Get Ready for State Qualifying -

(5-4-24) – Final prep for the state qualifying is complete. Harlan Community boys’ track earned a 4th place finish at the Hawkeye 10 Conference Track & Field Championships at Shenandoah on Thursday.

Cyclone boys’ track Coach Sam Brummer was pleased with how his team performed.

“Obviously broke some conference records which anytime you can break a Hawkeye 10 record, there's been some elite, elite athletes to grace the track there. So, to put our name in that kind of line of fire is no small feat.”

One athlete who seems ready for qualifying is Cade Sears. Sears won the 100 and 200 while helping the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 to conference titles. Brummer feels like the hard work Sears and the rest of his athletes have put in has him ready for State Qualifying on Thursday.

“Definitely hitting our stride right now, which is obviously the time you want to start lowering some of your times and that sort of thing. But Cade has just been phenomenal. Obviously, he's a tremendous athlete. He puts in a lot of time to perfecting his craft. Lot time on blocks and just an overall great kid to be around.”

One of the things Brummer likes about his athletes is the camaraderie they show to the coaching staff and each other.

“You know, it's fun to coach kids that obviously are athletically very talented. It makes your job as a coach somewhat easier just knowing they can go out and perform. But when they just have, you know, personality and they're just fun to be around and just kind of keep you young and keep you kind of in good spirits just with their overall presence. I feel we have that a lot with the senior class.”
