Underwood Boys’, Riverside Girls’ Win WIC Track Championships -
(5-1-24) – They avoid the raindrops enough to crown a pair of champions. A rain-soaked Western Iowa Conference track & field championships were able to name Underwood their winner of the boys’ 2024 title with 134 pts and Riverside the girls’ winner with 150 pts. Underwood’s Max Tiarks set WIC meet records in the discus at 168-08 and the shot put at 55-06.25. Tiarks says his resurgence this track season has been due to hard work and having his eye on the prize. “I've just put a lot of work in during the off season,” Tiarks told KNOD Sports. “Ever since state last year (when) I didn't make state discus and I was watching state and I made goals and I tried to execute and I've just put in the work and it's really starting to pay off.” Tiarks says he’s excited to show what he can do at state qualifying. “I really want to show what I worked for and you know, I want to go up there with some of the best of the best and try to get something done. That's my goal. Mason Boothby won the other two field events for the Eagles, taking the high jump at 6-03 and the long jump at 21-10.25. Treynor boys’ were 2nd with 117 pts and Riverside was 3rd with 101 pts. The Riverside girls’ won 4 of the final 5 events of the meet to claim the title. Lydia Erickson claimed the 100m and 200m titles, Carly Henderson took the 400m hurdles, and the Lady Dawgs also won the 4 by 100m and 4 by 400m. Treynor was 2nd with 126 pts while host Tri-Center finished 3rd with 117 pts. The Trojans girls got wins in the 4 by 800m and shuttle hurdle relay with Quincey Schneckloth leading the way. Schneckloth, who also finished 2nd in the 400m hurdles, says the training they’ve received in the hurdles is paying off. “Coach (Shelly) Sorenson has been working with us a lot on the hurdles. See, it's very important to her that we do our drills and focus on form every single day in practice. So when we get done with our running workouts, we go and we do hurdle workouts and she finds new drills for us to do every day to improve our form. Schneckloth thinks her team is where they need to be to compete for a shot at state and is looking forward to the challenge. “I think it looks very good for us and I'm excited to see what we can do at state qualifier.” State qualifying will take place on Thursday, May 9th.
