3-Ball Used by Cyclone BKB to Sweep Denison-Schleswig –

(12-12-25) – It was raining 3’s in Denison for the Hwy 59 rivalry Friday.

Addi Wicks had three of seven 3-ptr for Harlan Community as they cruised to a 70-40 victory over Denison-Schleswig.

Wicks, who had 13 points on the evening, said she felt good shooting from long distance.

“Through past games I haven't been shooting as much, and in practice I know I can make them, so I came out here and first one I shot, it went in, so I felt confident and I just kept shooting.”

Harlan Community used a 21-0 run in the 1st qtr to separate themselves from Denison-Schleswig, pushing out to a 40-9 halftime lead. Coach Zach Klaassen felt the half-court offense performed the way it’s supposed have been working all season long.

“Hopefully this is us turning the corner and just playing like we know we can play. There's a lot of potential in this group. It's just figuring out how to get it out of them.”

The Monarchs got going in the 3rd qtr behind leading scorer Ann Wessel, who scored 16 of the team’s 23 pts in the quarter.

Kenzley Bruck led the Cyclones with 23 pts while Brin VanBaale scored 13 pts. The Monarchs got 19 pts total from Wessel, all in the 2nd half.

In the boys’, it was a spark off the bench from Kreed Boggess, who led three Cyclones in double-figures with 19 pts in their 67-57 win over the Monarchs.

Boggess liked that he was able to contribute to the offense along with his teammates.

“It really started to sink in after I hit my third 3-ptr that I was kind of on a roll. But it was fun to just have, not just myself go out, but me, Dalia (Dallas McDowell), and Kobe (Klaassen) all go off and have a really good game.”

The game was a physical battle for Harlan Community and Denison-Schleswig that saw both teams reach the bonus in fouls for both quarters in the 2nd half.

A 12-0 run in the 1st half would give the Cyclones some distance from the Monarchs. Harlan Community would also score 41 pts in the 2nd and every point was needed to hold off hard-charging Denison-Schleswig, who scored 39 pts themselves over the same span.

Harlan Community Coach Dean Mosher liked getting another source of offense, aside from top-scorers Dallas McDowell and Kobe Klaassen.

“(Boggess) stood out a little bit, and again, people stepping up when people are focusing on, Dallas and Kobe, and it's good to see others have that success and gain from that for the future.”

Kobe Klaassen had 17pts for the Cyclones. He and his teammates knew this contest against their Hawkeye Ten rivals would be a tough one.

“We knew it wasn’t gonna be easy. We had a rough one on Tuesday vs Kuemper (Catholic) and we bounced back Thursday vs Creston. Just kept on trying to move the ball and limit mistakes.”

McDowell had 18 pts while Klaassen had 17 for the Cyclones. Blaine Grady led the Monarchs with 16.
