Scrappy Cyclones SB Falls Short Against LC, 10-6 –

(6-18-24) – It was one of their scrappiest games of the season by the Cyclones, but it wasn’t enough.

Harlan Community couldn’t hold on to the lead late as they allowed Lewis Central to score 5 times in the final two innings to fall by a final of 10-6 in Council Bluffs Tuesday afternoon.

The game time was moved up due to the potential for severe weather later in the day.

Cyclone Coach Tarah Devlin-Lawler was impressed with the heart her team showed.

“They really played well. We were able to get the bat on the ball and create some really great hits and get some girls on the bases and move them around and it was a fun game to watch. These girls really kind of put everything into play that we've been putting into practice.”

After the Cyclones took an early lead with 2 runs in the first, capped off by a Taylor Heese single, the Titans came back with back-to-back homers by Cami Damgaard and Alyssa Griffin to take a 3-2 lead at the end of the first frame. Lewis Central then added two more in the 2nd to hold a 5-2 advantage.

A sac fly by Aubree Wegner in the 3rd cut the deficit to 5-3. A pair of miscues by the Titans in the 5th allowed the Cyclones to score three runs, capped by a Wegner 2-RBI single, to give Harlan Community a 6-5 lead.

That’s when Damgaard took over.

She tied the game for Lewis Central with a 2-out RBI single in the bottom of the inning, then set Harlan Community down in order to keep it tied.

That set the stage for Mackenzie Nailor, who would hit a bases-clearing double with 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th to give the Titans a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Wegner finished the game 1 for 2 with 3 RBI. Lawler sees how much better Wegner is at the plate, compared to earlier in the year.

“She's really improved quite a lot, just working on her batting and making sure she's following the fundamentals and making sure that she staying where she needs to be in the batter’s box and doing the things that she needs to do on the bat.”

Avery Manz had 2 hits and scored 3 runs for the Cyclones.

Lawler hopes the confidence team is building will continue and soon result in adding to their win column.

“These girls are playing their hearts out and I appreciate every bit of their attitude and their ability to come out and do what they love out here on the field.”

Harlan Community who will head back to Council Bluffs today to take on Abraham Lincoln.
