Sluggish Start Downs Woodbine Girls’ in State Tournament Game Against Newell-Fonda, 81-60 -

(3-1-23) – The trip was short but sweet.

Woodbine’s first girls’ basketball state tournament game in 49 years would be dominated by Newell-Fonda as early missed shots and turnovers would end the Tigers season with a 81-60 loss to the Mustangs in the Class 1A State Tournament.

“They fought tooth and nail, we just didn’t execute as well as we needed to,” Coach Ryan Coenen told KNOD Sports after the game. “Too many turnovers, we know that part. We know that’s what Newell wants to do. We just didn’t do a very good job… when we did break the press, we didn’t capitalize.”

Newell-Fonda was able to capitalize as they outscored Woodbine in points off turnovers 22 to 3 in the 1st half.

“My shots just weren’t going in,” said Charlie Pryor after the game. “And so I told myself that I was gonna fix that in the 2nd half.”

Pryor did begin to execute, scoring 14 of her 17 points after halftime. Teammate Nicole Hoefer also got going in the 3rd hitting several big threes as her team was trying to erase a 23-pt halftime deficit.

“We were just trying to find the open hand and it happened to be me tonight,” said Hoefer, who led the Tigers with 19 pts. “I mean it could’ve been anyone on the team. Anyone else could have done the same thing.”

Newell-Fonda shot over 55 percent from the floor as Mary Walker led the way with 24 pts.

Woodbine finishes their season 23-3.
