Big Things Expected from HC Boys’ Tennis -

(4-2-26) – Let’s hear it for the boys!

Boys’ high school tennis is flying solo this spring, after girls’ tennis moved to the fall. Harlan Community Boys Tennis Co-Coach Michael Rueschenberg believes that one of the advantages of instructing only boys’ tennis this spring is that he and Coach Dillon Stane have more time to work with players individually.

“It's been nice for Coach Stane and I to be able to really both focus in together on the boys and give them that individual coaching that they need.”

Rueschenberg likes the enthusiastic effort being made this off-season by Caden Herbst.

“Now that he's a number one and played a lot, he's got all the basics down. We're trying to get him to more of those advanced thinking level things. But we're really excited for him this season. I think he can have a lot of success. He's put in the work, he's a great kid, and we're excited to see him compete.”

Rueschenberg also likes the fire that Kobe Klaassen brings to court.

“We love the good aggression and the competitive spirit and that fire and that's something that he's brought, which is awesome. It's just made, I would say, made our practices and made our competition so far just as a team more competitive with everybody, which is good to see.”

The Cyclone tennis team has as many as 15 athletes out for this year’s squad, including senior Jonas Reynold, whom Rueschenberg feels brings some athleticism to their team.

“Right away we could tell just being an athlete, playing other sports, Jonas has had some success on the court,” said Rueschenberg. “Obviously, he's pretty raw in some areas on the court with never having played before. But he's also some areas where he's done, you know, serving, he's had a lot of success doing, and he's a tall kid. We can use that to his advantage and he's been aggressive in getting to the net.”

Some other team members Rueschenberg and Stane expect to make a difference this season include Dale Scheuring, Ramsey Hussing, Jude Mastin, and Jameson Arentson, among others.

Cyclone boys’ tennis will hit the court for the first time against Southwest Valley on Monday.
