Board Domination has St. Albert GBB Back in the State Semis, Beat Dunkerton, 42-31 -

(3-5-25) – The bounces went the Saintes way to guide them back to semis.

Avah Underwood had a double-double with 13 pts & 15 boards in St. Albert’s 42-31 victory over Dunkerton in the Class 1A State Quarterfinals Wednesday.

The Saintes outrebounded the Raiders 46 to 30, including 19 to 9 on the offensive boards. Underwood says it’s a big part of their game.

“One of our biggest emphasis in games and stuff is, ‘Don't let defense get second chances.’ If we don’t finish, get our rebounds because really it ends plays and it makes plays.”

The rebounding gave St. Albert the edge in 2nd chance points, 11 to 2. Coach Dick Wettengel knew that the rebounding was important in their victory.

“That first half I was really impressed with our defensive effort. They didn't get many second shots and you know, I think that was an important part of the game that we took away. So, that was a big key to this win actually, was our rebounding edge.”

St. Albert began the game with a 10-0 run over the 4:59 of the game and didn’t look back. Despite losing more turnovers than creating, the Saintes made the most out of their opportunities, getting 15 points off of turnovers, including 12 in the first half.

Maura Ryan had 7 pts for the Saintes. She feels this time around at State Tournament is not much different then last year.

“We're still very focused. I mean, now we're looking at Friday same thing as last year, but our goal is to go farther this year. That's something we've talked about all year.”

Dunkerton was led by Ava Fuelling who had 11 points including three of the team’s four 3-pointers. It was just the 2nd ever tournament appearance for the Raiders, who finish their season 17-8.

It will be rematch of last year’s quarterfinal contest as St. Albert will play Bishop Garrigan on Friday in the 1A Semifinals beginning at 1:30p.
