Brummer Feels ‘Experience’ will Help Cyclone Boys’ Track Succeed This Year -

(3-18-26) – Expectations are high for Cyclone boys’ track this season.

Harlan Community Boys’ Track Coach Sam Brummer feels his athletes performance at the Iowa Association of Track Coaches Indoor Championships last week is good starting point for the season.

“It's just kind of a way to go out and use it as a practice against other schools. Go out and see where we kind of stack and what we can improve on and I think overall kids did really well and we'll just look to build off of that for future meets here in the upcoming weeks.”

One important thing for Brummer is his relay teams getting the baton around the track and the relay team of Cade Nelson, Landon Nihsen, Sam Shields, and Hagen Sorensen now has a familiarity with how to run those types of races after being thrown into the fire last year.

“(We were) just a little green, just didn't have the experience in the meets that we had the years before and so now this year with those guys coming back and as well as a host of other kids, we've got some experience now.”

Nelson, Nihsen, Sheilds, and Sorensen were able to get the “stick around the track” in the 4x400m with a time of 3:38.42.

Also getting their legs under them to start the season were Jeffery Gross and Erik Heslink who finished back-to-back in the 3200m. Gross was 9th with a 10:11.45 and Heslink finished with a 10:20.43. Brummer feels they’ve both benefited from having to run distance races at the top-level very early in their careers.

“Two guys that have been varsity runners since they are freshmen, kind of got to kind of own those races just because we really didn't have a lot of distance guys when they came up. So we're kind of a trial by fire, so to speak of, you know, we're not maybe ready for the varsity races yet, but you're just going to learn and learn to compete and kind of figure it out and I think they're kind of reaping the benefits of that right now.”

The Cyclone boys’ track team will start their outdoor season at the Carroll Early Bird Co-Ed on Thu, March 26th.
