Cyclone Baseball Falls to Glenwood in Substate Semis, 5-4 -

(7-11-22) - It doesn't always come out as your draw it up.

Harlan Community seemed to have the advantage, but couldn't find a way to beat their Hawkeye Ten rival Glenwood, losing in the Class 3A Substate 8 Semifinals, 5-4, Monday night.

After the Cyclones took a 2-0 lead on a error in the 1st, the Rams would come right back and use two Harlan Community errors to put their first 6 batter on in the 2nd, scoring 4 times to take the lead.

"We were able to get some free bases and free runs really off them and then we just kind of gave them right back in that 2nd inning," Coach Heath Stein told KNOD Sports after the game. "(We) kept it tight. Really, I thought we were still in a good spot as the game progressed but we couldn't get big hits when we needed them, couldn't get guys in, and it ended how it did."

Cyclone would tie the game up at 4 in the 3rd, getting two more unearned runs helped by error to score Joey Moser and an RBI single by Alex Monson.

It looked like Harlan Community was finally going to get the momentum changing play when Cade Sears made an incredible catch in deep left center field to rob Jayme Fritts of an RBI and extra bases for the 2nd out in the 4th. But an intentional walk to Kayden Anderson and a hit by pitch to Trent Patton loaded the bases where J.D. Colpitts would get a walk on a 3-2 pitch to force in the eventual winning run.

Braydon Ernst struggled over 7 innings, giving up 5 runs, only one earned, and walking 5 while striking out 2. It's Ernst only loss of the season.

Fritts gave the Cyclones fits, allowing the 4 runs, none of them earned, in 6 innings on just 3 hits. He did walk 5 but struck out 7. Risto Lappala pitched a perfect 7th for the save.

Harlan Community finishes their season with a record of 24-8.
