Cyclone BKB Can’t Slowdown Glenwood in DH Defeat -

(12-16-25) – Just wasn’t the Cyclones night, dropping both ends of a double dip on the road.

Harlan Community girls’ basketball struggled early with turnovers couldn’t get back into the game in a 59-46 loss to Glenwood.

The Cyclones would overcome a strong start by the Rams Maggie Smith who scored the first 22 pts of the game for her team to close the gap to 4 pts at the half. But a strong 2nd half by the Rams would be the Cyclones downfall.

Harlan Community Coach Zach Klaassen said Smith’s first half performance was surprising.

“We have a girl that we're locking down, averages 28 a game. Nobody's really scored any points outside of her. They're averaging 37 as a team. Smith saw the window is open. She snuck in and stole everything out of the house felt like. You know, we talked about after she made her first two, hey, we got an identifier and somehow she got lost in the half quart. I'm not sure how, but she did.”

Smith would finish with 27 pts for the Rams while teammate Maggie McChesney, who led Glenwood with 28 PPG had 17.

The Cyclones committed 24 turnovers for the game, many on the full court pressure being put on the Rams. Klaassen knows his team can do better breaking the press than they did on Tuesday in their loss to Glenwood.

“Trying to throw long passes. Not cutting. Not meeting passes. Not dribbling with our head up. When you spend all that energy to get that game within two points, you can't make those mental mistakes.”

Harlan Community got 15 pts from Kenzley Bruck, 12 pts for Brin VanBaale, and Taylor Heese had 7 pts off the bench.

In the boys’ game, Glenwood was just too much for Harlan Community, as they fell, 69-52. The Cyclones were only down by three after the 1st qtr, but the Rams outscored the Cyclones 26 to 10 in the 2nd qtr to turn the tide of the contest.

Cyclone Coach Dean Mosher felt his team showed some flashes against a good shooting Glenwood lineup.

“(We) came out aggressive. I thought we did it at times in spurts. We just couldn't hang on to it for that long. And they made some shots. They kind of just stretched it out slowly and we couldn't really stay with them for too long.”

But also Mosher knows his team missed some opportunities early in their loss to the Rams and has some things to improve on.

“Just getting our hands on the basketball for a lot of the quarter. We had some decent looks and we had decent stands on defense. It was a second chance and third chance that kind of gave up and gave him some extra opportunities to score.”

The Cyclones also had a poor shooting night, going 16-58 from the field, including 5-24 from outside the arc.

Colton Schneider and Kreed Boggess had 9 pts for Harlan Community while Dallas McDowell led the way with 10 pts. Bradley Hughes had 14 pts off the bench to lead Glenwood.

Harlan Community will look to bounce back when they play their final games before the holiday break when they travel down to Red Oak Friday.
