Cyclone BKB Earns Split of DH with Atlantic -

(2-10-26) – “Second verse. Same as the first.” That’s what happened to Harlan Community in their 2nd go-around against Hawkeye Ten rival Atlantic on Tuesday, as they earned a doubleheader split at the Palace.

Kobe Klaassen attacked the rim early and often, putting up a 20-pt effort in the Cyclones 72-58 win over the Trojans.

Harlan Community rolled out to an 18-pt lead at the half, led by Klaassen’s effort along with a terrific performance by Colton Schneider, who had 8 of his 13 pts in the first half. Klaassen likes the way Schneider plays.

“He's really fun to play with. He's pretty calm, he's composed, and he takes good shots. He's a great player.”

Klaassen, who led four Cyclones in double-figures, also likes how his teammates are continuing to step up.

“It feels good. It makes me feel better for next year, even with those guys stepping up. We lost really (some) close games all year, and we just need to finish these ones, and we did tonight.”

The Cyclones got 15 pts (12 in the 2nd half) from Kreed Boggess off the bench while Dallas McDowell and Schneider each had 13 pts.

Harlan Community Coach Dean Mosher was also impressed with how his athletes intensified their play.

“A lot of people stepped up. We moved the ball quite well, and you could see confidence in everybody shooting the ball and wanting to be aggressive. So, it was nice to see.”

Gavin McLaren led the Trojans with 28 pts.

In the girls’ game, Harlan Community had a 6-pt lead on Atlantic going into the 4th qtr, but the offense sputtered late again and the Cyclones dropped a 49-38 decision to the Trojans.

After trailing by 4 pts at the half, it was a terrific 3rd qtr which saw the Harlan Community defense hold Atlantic to just 3 pts and take a 34-28 lead into the break. But the Cyclones shooting went cold, especially from the outside, as they were outscored 21-4 in the final frame.

Coach Zach Klaassen felt the effort by his team was much better than the first time the teams met this season.

“If you look at the team we are tonight compared to the team we were at Atlantic, it's night and day difference. We just gotta figure out how to get rid of these timely turnovers when we're on a little run.”

Klaassen also feels his players will need to work on their 3-pt shooting, which is 7 for 55 in the past four games, if they want to make an impact in regional play starting next Wednesday.

“I mean, we're wide open just how we want. It goes into (Kensley Bruck), gets pop back out or we dribble penetrate and it gets kicked out. So, those are the threes we want to shoot. Those are the perfect types of threes to shoot, but we just can't buy one right now.”

Bruck had 15 pts while Avery Manz contributed 9 points to Harlan Community. Atlantic was led by Peyton McLaren’s 13 pts.

The Cyclones and Trojans had the same outcome in their doubleheader down in Atlantic on Jan. 16th.
