Cyclone Boys’ Soccer Starts Season with 1-1 Week -

(4-2-25) – Some made expected strides. Some offered big surprises.

Harlan Community Boys’ Soccer Coach Dave Voge likes how his mix of older and younger players have come together over their first two matches.

“So far the juniors from last year, they're seniors now, have really stepped up, showing a lot of leadership for us,” Voge told KNOD Sports on Wednesday.  “We had some surprises also in the freshman class that have turned out really well for us so far in the first two games.”

The Cyclone boys’ have started the season 1-1 with a season opening victory over Panorama, 6-1, on Monday, but falling to Treynor, 2-1, on Tuesday.

Sophomore forward Landon Nihsen has been hot to begin the year with 3 goals in the first two games. Nihsen was unable to play last year due to an injury and is finally getting to show Voge what he can do on the pitch.

“It's really nice to have him back this year. He's a very strong up front as a forward. He's really good with the ball and has a lot of speed and has a really good finish to him. So, really pleased to have him back this year, actually, it's his first time playing with us. The players are kind of getting used to playing with him too.”

Harlan Community is getting great leadership from seniors like Spencer Fink, who had 2 goals in season opener. Voge’s connection with the family over the years allows him to know what Fink brings to the field.

“The Fink family is very, very close to me and (Cyclone Asst) Coach Pat Shelton. We've coached their other boys over the past several 10 to 15 years and even longer than that with youth and so, we're really familiar with him and Spencer’s just a great guy. He's got a great attitude and he brings a lot of skill and knowledge of the game of soccer and he’s just been a great leader, trying to help out the younger guys. The guy just never gives up.”

Harlan Community next hit the pitch against Carroll at Merrill Field on Monday.
