Cyclone BKB Splits with Atlantic in Iowa Wolves High School Hoop Series -

(2-12-25) – The Cyclones got to make dreams come true on Tuesday… even if the endings weren’t the way they wanted them.

Harlan Community got a split in the Iowa Wolves High School Hoop Series at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, with the boys’ winning over Atlantic, 59-44, but the Cyclone girls falling to the Trojans, 63-41.

In the boys’ game, Dallas McDowell led the way with a career-high 27 pts. He told KNOD Sports that things were working for him early.

“I was just what was working from the start. You know, I found something that worked and I kept going at it and we kept going at it and just all the teammates were able to help us, help me do that and it just worked out in the end.”

The win breaks Harlan Community’s 3-game losing streak. Kinnick Juhl had 11 for Atlantic, who have now lost 12 in a row.

Senior Jozef Reisz, who scored 13 pts, talked about being part of the experience of playing on such a big stage.

“Everyone dreams of playing here at Wells Fargo, whether it's State or anything. It's just a great atmosphere. We had a lot of fans actually show up, so it was great to play here and have a game. Especially winning. Winning’s a big thing.”

It brought back fond memories for Cyclones Coach Mitch Osborn, who took several of his teams to Des Moines to compete for State Championships. He hopes they can partake in this event annually.

“Lot of great memories. I was glad the guys got to play in that situation. I told Anthony (Donahoo, Harlan Community Athletic Director) that it would be great be able to maybe try to do this every year or every other year.”

The Cyclone girls’, however, didn’t have as much fun at The Well as they just couldn’t slow down Atlantic. It left Coach Zach Klaassen surprised by the outcome.

“We just came out either flat or nervous, or both,” Klaassen said following the game. “I can say I didn't see that coming. Hats off to Atlantic. They beat us like a drum, it was quite a deal.”

The Trojans got 15 pts each from both Zoey Kirchhoff and Katrina Williams. 11 pts each for Molly Swensen and Grace Albertsen.

Despite the loss, Klaassen still feels his team is right about where he expected them to be.

“I would say we were probably one or two losses away from where I thought we would be. I thought maybe we would be 19-2, but possibility of 18-3 type record. So we're close to where I thought we'd be at this time of the year.”

Harlan Community ends their regular season 17-4. They’ll play Red Oak at the Palace to start regional play on Saturday.
