Cyclone Boys’ BB Suffers “Devastating” Loss to Creston, 48-46 -

(2-1-25) – A rollercoaster game would end the wrong way for the Cyclones.

Creston would get a bucket from Brayden Schoon on an inbounds pass with :01 second left to send Harlan Community to a crushing defeat by a final of 48-46.

“It is devastating. Feel very, very bad for our guys. They played hard,” said Cyclones Coach Mitch Osborn.

Harlan Community took the lead with just under 2 minutes remaining on a 3-pt by Dallas McDowell. He finished the game with 25 pts. But Creston’s Parker Varner would go down and hit a baseline jumper to tie the game at 46 and a Jake Hoyt block stopped the Cyclones from regaining the lead.

A slow start to the game didn’t help the Cyclones cause, according to Osborn.

“We had eight turnovers and we had five (1st quarter) points, so we only scored three points for 7 minutes. But the turnovers against their man-to-man defense, we're just devastating and you're down 12.”

Harlan Community was able to make a hard charge over the next two quarters, outscoring Creston 32-15 over that time span.

But one moment in the 4th qtr would be the difference, as far as Osborn was concerned. With the Cyclones leading 37-29, Schoon scored along a baseline and was fouled on the play. After missing the free throw, the ball was rebounded Parker Varner who immediately passed it along to Jake Hoyt who nailed a 3-ptr from the left side.

“It's a 5-point possession. We’re ahead by 9 then, so it goes from 9 to 4… In the matter of a snap of a finger. One possession.”

Hoyt had 19 pts to lead the Panthers, who are now 8-8 on the year. Kobe Klaassen added 14 pts and 8 rebounds for Harlan Community, who fell to 6-9 on the season.
