Cyclone Boys’ Soccer Becoming ‘Beautiful to Watch’ -

(5-5-26) – Things are starting to come together for Cyclone boys’ soccer.

In their past three matches, they're 1-1-1, with a big 1-0 win over Glenwood at Morrison Stadium, a tight 2-1 loss to Winterset, and a 3-3 tie with Abraham Lincoln.

Harlan Community Coach Levi Culp feels his team is starting to get a feel for the game.

“They're playing a heck of a lot smarter and they're not just playing fast. They find a path, they find the right option, then they move up the field and it's been beautiful to watch.”

The defense has certain seen an improvement. After allowing 8 goals in the first two games of the season, the Cyclones have given up just 12 goals in their past 10 games.

“They're working on all the little things that we can control and do, such as our team defending instead of just our back four and goalie doing it. The whole team's helping out and defending when they can and hustling back as best they can,” said Culp.

Senior leadership from Jake Wageman got his first two goals on the season over the past two games and is showing real leadership for his team, which is helping out Culp and his coaches in the process.

“He's just the most mature, phenomenal young man that I've ever been around. He's consistent with everything. He's making sure his teammates are doing the right stuff, even when I'm not around. I trust him with stuff like that.”

Culp also likes how Will Schmitz, who’s had a goal and two assists in the past three games, has sparked the offense.

“What helps him out the most is that he's staying composed and he's looking for his teammates constantly. Every time he gets the ball he's trying to look up and find somebody to connect with and they're starting to see that too and trying to help him out and he's always looking for the attacking ball as well.”

The Cyclone boys’ will look to continue working on their craft as the face Carroll at Merrill Field Thursday.
