Cyclone Boys’ Tennis Dominates SW Valley in Season Opener, 9-0 -

(4-7-26) – It seems to be coming together for Cyclone boys’ tennis.

Harlan Community opened their season with 9-0 victory over Southwest Valley. It’s the 2nd season in a row the Cyclones have beaten the Timberwolves to open the season.

“We were really excited with (Monday’s) win. 9-0 to start the season is awesome. Especially (since) we were able to beat Southwest Valley at the beginning of last season, but that was a 5-4 win. So, to open up this year with a pretty dominant 9-0 win was awesome. We saw a lot of great stuff from our guys.”

One of the new players for the Cyclones is senior Jonas Reynolds, who dominated in his match against the Timberwolves Carter Giles, 8-0.

“Really dominant performance,” said Rueschenberg about Reynold’s varsity tennis debut. “It was a very dominant, efficient win. He served the ball really well, and he didn't make a ton of mistakes. He let his opponent make the mistakes, and then when he went to serve, he went for some big shots and was able to connect.”

Kobe Klaassen won his first match from Harlan Community’s No. 1 position, beating Jordan Bruce, 8-3. Klaassen beat out Caden Herbst from that position, Rueschenberg feels it’s more of a No. 1A & No. 1B situation for his two top athletes.

“I think they'll probably, you know, be challenging each other quite a bit this throughout the season for that number one spot. And the best part about that is, if we have two guys that are pretty equal and challenging each other for that number one spot, that just means they're making each other better and always working and improving.”

Herbst won his match at No. 2 over Brody Sparks, 8-5.

In the other singles contests, the Cyclones got wins from Ramsey Hussing (8-3 over Henry Means), Jameson Arentson (8-6 over Anis Alchdar), and Dale Scheuring (9-7 over Ben Waddell).

With the match won after singles’ play, Rueschenberg said he decided, along with Coach Dillon Stane, to mix and match their doubles teams and got outstanding performances from each, including the combination of Herbst and Scheuring, who blanked Giles and Means, 8-0.

“Caden and Dale played really well together. They're really good friends, so it was fun to be able to get them to be able to play together in a varsity match. They were just both really dominant.”

Harlan Community is scheduled to play Denison-Schleswig at home on Thursday before participating in the Shenandoah Tournament on Saturday.
