Cyclone Boys’ Track Fine-Tunes at Atlantic Meet -

(5-6-26) – Some fine-tuning for the post season. That’s how Harlan Community boys’ track approached the Bruce Henderson Invitational in Atlantic on Monday.

“We knew we weren't going to try to go out and capture a team title or really do anything,” said Cyclone Coach Sam Brummer. “It was more of just kind of making one last ditch effort to see some things on the track that hopefully will pay dividends for us on Thursday at Hawk(eye) 10 (Conference Championships).”

Harlan Community got 28 pts total, helped out by Sam Shields, who earned a 2nd place finish in the 200m with a time of 23.64. He also ran 11.66 in the 100m. Considering his dual sport workload with soccer, Brummer liked that was able show some of the speed he’s capable of providing.

“I thought he… performed pretty well as the times you mentioned were two of his best of the year.”

With the Hawkeye 10 Conference Championships being held in Glenwood, Brummer talked about how nice it will be to compete there just a week before they return a week later for state qualifying.

“Glenwood, Denison and Carroll and Atlantic seem to kind of be the host spots for southwest Iowa and it's not really a coincidence that our schedule kind of matches that as well, so we get to Carroll and Atlantic and Denison and Glenwood as often as we can, because one of those four, depending on the year, will probably have a big meet on it for us to get to qualify the state.”

That Hawkeye 10 Conference Championship will take place on Thursday.
