Cyclone Boys’ Track Fine Tuning for Conference, State Qualifying –

(4-29-26) – With just a couple of meets before the postseason begins, Harlan Community boys’ track is looking keep the positive momentum going.

So even though the score didn’t show it from their meet in Carlisle, an 8th place finish with 33 pts, there was plenty to be pleased about while competing against some very tough competition.

“That's really why we go to that meet. You know, it's about the competition,” said Cyclone boys’ track Coach Sam Brummer.

That’s been Brummer’s attitude from the beginning… run against the best. It allows his athletes to see what they need to do to get better and where they compare to top competition.

Brummer knows his athletes need to continue to improve, but knows there’s still time for that improvement.

“We're not quite ready there yet, but we also don't need to be. So, as long as we can get it on May 14th, that's going to be the end goal.”

Harlan Community ran 6 relays at Carlisle and pointed in all of them with their best finish of 3rd place in both the Sprint Med with at time of 1:36.01 and the 4x400m in 3:37.72. While still putting emphasis on individual events, Brummer does feel the relays give his team a good chance to reach state, if they can tighten things up.

“Really focusing on the relays, getting some handoffs. Again, sometimes (it) feels like we're hitting three out of the four which, you know, will pass you through a class, but isn't going to probably pass you on the track in terms of where we want to get to with State. We got to hit all four and so we're trying to build some consistency there.”

That’s why Brummer has his athletes concentrating on perfecting the basics as the regular season winds down.

“We're going to focus on us and continue to work on handoffs, starts, and competing. Our real mantra or schedule isn't going to be dictated or changed too much based off of kind of where we're at.”

Both Harlan Community track teams will be competing at the Underwood Co-Ed Relays today.
