Cyclone Boys’ Track Making Progress as Regular Season Winds Down -

(5-1-25) – Although this has been a trying track season for the Harlan Community boys’ team, improvements have been seen and the potential to succeed is there amongst a group of young athletes.

The Cyclone boys’ track team finished 9th in the Carlisle Boys’ Relays on Tuesday with 24 pts, but received some solid outcomes in various events.

For one, Coach Sam Brummer feels his relays teams are progressing in the right direction. They earned a 3rd place finish in the 4x400m and 4th place finishes in the 4x200m and Distance Medley.

“We're kind of at the point now (that) we got to pick a pony and ride it, so to speak. So, we have a pretty good sense of our order of how things will go. Now, we just got to get more consistent with getting the stick around and that's very much a work in progress.”

Jeffery Gross finished with a personal record despite just a 6th place finish at Carlisle. Brummer feels tougher competition for the sophomore is definitely good for him to progress forward.

“You know, you can go to smaller meets and run slower times and get first, but it's kind of a false sense of security because your time is going to be what gets you in the State, either running a fast time to finish in (the) Top-2 or you know the next at-large spots are solely based on time. So I'm super proud of Jeffrey and his accomplishments there to continue to kind of improve.”

Battling against some of the best in the state is why Brummer likes seeing his athletes compete at Carlisle.

“Competition is what we've kind of built the foundation of this track team on. You know, we're not going to shy away and run away, I guess from people in tough meets. We want to run against the best teams we possibly can, which is why we go up to Carlisle.”

Both Cyclone track teams will next compete in the Trojan Co-Ed in Atlantic on Monday.
