Cyclone FB Falls Short Against Glenwood, 28-19 –

(9-4-26) – The fight was there… the results were not.

After leading at halftime, Harlan Community would give up three second-half scores to Glenwood in a 28-19 loss on the road on Friday.

Cyclone Coach Todd Bladt was pleased with the improvement his team showed, despite the loss.

“We played a lot better this week. We still got a lot of things we can shore up, that's for sure. We gave up a few big plays, but for the most part in the run game, we were pretty solid second-half, we started allowing a few different things to happen that kind of led to our demise there. But we had some unfortuitous things happen.”

The Cyclones had an opportunity to tie the game in the 4th qtr with 1:38 left, but a 2-pt conversion attempt following a Kreed Boggess 1yd TD run was short. Harlan Community the attempted an onside kick that failed to reach required 10 yds and Glenwood took the ball on the Cyclone 48. The Rams would immediately get a 48-yd TD run on the very next play from Haze Stephens to seal the game.

Harlan Community’s defense also appeared to have a three fumbles, one that was recovered by officials ruled the runner down, another on a 4th & 1 that was not ruled down, then appeared to be placed behind the line of gain, but a 1st down was given to Glenwood anyway, and another that bounced away and was picked up by the Rams Lincoln Skarnulis for a TD to put the Rams on top to end their opening drive of the 2nd half.

Bladt feels the ball didn’t bounce his team’s way… and it was a major difference.

“Those are things that happen in the course of a game and they can have a big effect, that's for sure. So, we just got to rise up and play a little better and finish a game.”

Harlan Community’s offense would only get field goals on their first two drives as Jacob Spangenberg hit from 35yds and 37yds out respectively to give the Cyclones a 6-0 lead. Harlan Community would score on their first three drives of the game with drives of 6:16, 3:50, and 4:14 in length.

Defensively, Harlan Community got a big blocked field goal by Jackson Ahrenholtz that would have tied the game midway through the 1st qtr after a long opening drive by the Rams.

The Cyclones Landon Nihsen had 5 receptions for 69 yards while Boggess rushed for 2 touchdowns. Bladt liked how Boggess managed the game at times, but also feels better protection from the offensive line will help him.

“I think he's developing. We got to give him a little more time. If there was a knock on the old line tonight, it would have been the amount of time we had in pass protection that was probably the weak point of the night.”

Brody Bendorf had 9.5 tackles while Coy Obrecht had 7 tackles for Harlan Community.

Joe Leick had 117yds on the ground for the Rams, most in the 2nd half where scored what would be the game-winning TD. Glenwood would put up 403 yds total offense against Harlan Community’s defense, including 255yds rushing.

Harlan Community is now 0-2 going into another road trip against Lewis Central on Friday.
