Cyclone Football Spotlight: Brett Heese –

(9-6-24) – Goals are important to inspire players and bring focus for their upcoming season. It’s goals that are driving Harlan Community’s OL/DL Brett Heese this season.

“I want to make a name for myself on our D-line a little bit,” Heese recently told KNOD Sports. “Just gotta get some reps from coming out on offense right now. Try to work my way into that starting defensive line role, but we'll have a lot of sacks this year. And then offensively, we like to run the ball, get a couple pancakes and have a good year.”

Heese did lots of work in the offseason to prepare for his returning role on the offensive line.

“They put me on offensive line. I had to learn how to redo that because I played O-line back in my sophomore year and last year I played fullback for first (game of) the season and then got hurt and then just (played) D-line when I came back from that injury. So, I had to relearn O-line, which Coach Blatt and I are still working on, but looking to have a great year there.”

As a senior, Heese knows leadership is part of his responsibilities this season. He thinks the example being shown by teammate Bryce VanBaale is what to expect from a leader.

“Being a leader, you're going to make the plays, keep your teammates under control so they don't lose their composure, like Bryce did against Lewis Central with those 17 tackles…. That's what the leader does right there running across the field, making tackles and he also got some action in on offense as well.”

The full interview with Brett Heese is available above.
