IOWA HAWKEYES & CHICAGO CUBS
Harlan Community's Aubrey Schwieso (1-25-24)
Cyclone Girls’ BB Blasts Trojans, 69-37, Behind Schwieso’s 32 –
(1-25-24) – Air Schwieso was the feature in Atlantic on Thursday.
Aubrey Schwieso scored a career-high 32pts as Harlan Community ran away with a 69-37 win over Hawkeye 10 foe Atlantic.
Schwieso told KNOD Sports her success was due to the play of her teammates.
“My teammates. Credit to all of them for getting me the ball. You know, we tried to take super smart shots and I think our defense led into offense tonight. We were pushing the ball really well. Transition layups were working, too.”
Seeing Schwieso lead the way is nothing new for Coach Zach Klaassen.
“She's just a leader all the time. You know, she's just always playing hard. Just some nights the ball goes in a little bit more than other nights. She did it in different ways, too. She got to the rim quite a few times, and hit, I don't know how many threes she ended up with, but she had a decent amount of threes and it was good to see those go in.”
Schwieso had 7 of the Cyclones 8 3-pointers on the evening. With drives to the lane being shut down, Klaassen like those outside shots falling to loosen the defense up.
“They really locked that lane up it seemed like, so to that ball going from outside makes things go a little bit easier.”
The Cyclones jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the Trojans scored their first bucket of the game with just over 3 min remaining in the 1st qtr.
One thing Harlan Community did early on was establish the backdoor pass against the zone, with Molly Swensen capitalizing for 6 pts on passes from Hannah Sonderman and Ava Monson.
“I think all of our guards have great eyes for passes, and Molly was making really good cuts,” said Schwieso. “That defense was going towards Erica and then we saw that cross court pass. We made it a few times and it worked out really well.”
Erica Rust had another double-double for the Cyclones with 14 pts and 10 boards. Maddie Richter led the Trojans with 9 pts while the Hawkeye 10’s leading scorer, Paytn Harter, was held to just 2 pts.
Klaassen also likes that his team is playing fantastic defense.
“We constantly have ball pressure, high hands. We're deflecting passes and we just tell the girls deflections as good as a steal. You know, it might not go down as a steal in your stat line, but somebody else is going to get one and maybe you get to run out lay up from getting the deflection.”
As the season winds down and the Cyclones add more to their repertoire, Schwieso and her teammates are super excited about what this team can achieve moving forward.
“We really have really high hopes for the future. We're going to work hard to practice. We have a game right away. Tomorrow we're going to try and get a couple more wins to try and finish out this regular season.”
Harlan Community will face Creston on the road as part of the girls’/boys’ doubleheader on Friday.
