Cyclone Girls’ BB Drops Season Opener to Treynor, 52-38 –

(11-25-25) – It wasn’t the outcome they wanted at the Palace on Tuesday.

The new look Harlan Community girls’ basketball team couldn’t muster up enough offense, as they fell to Treynor 52-38 in their season opener.

Coach Zach Klaassen felt his team played tight in their first game.

“I thought we were over the hump when we got down to four. Like everybody's just settled in a little bit. We're relaxed and it wasn't the case,” Klaassen told KNOD Sports following the game.

The Cyclones actually mounted a nice 1st half comeback after trailing 10-2 early. A 3-ptr by Avery Manz, followed by a 2-pt put back by Taylor Heese cut the deficit to 2 at 15-13 midway through the 2nd qtr. But the Cardinals would then go on a 9-2 run to end the half and Harlan Community wouldn’t get any closer.

Rebounding was an issue for the Cyclones as Treynor had 30 boards, including 14 on the offensive side.

“We're going to work on some boxing out again,” said Klaassen. “We've already worked on it some, but apparently not enough. We need to tighten things up and get a little more aggressive on that.”

Brinley Van Baale had 6 pts and 7 rebounds for the Cyclones while providing some scrappy, physical play that impressed Klaassen.

“Gritty, you know, gritty. She made a couple of nice moves in the fourth quarter into the third, somewhere in there. Got some O-boards, you know, felt like he had to get some putbacks up, but you know, played well.”

Kenzley Bruck led the Cyclones with 14 pts and 9 rebounds. Asya Sonderman also took advantage of playing late in the game getting 4 pts and 4 rebounds off the bench in the final minutes of the contest.

Ella Thornton led three Treynor scorers in double figures with 12 points.

Despite the loss to open the season, Klaassen reminds us that his team was in a similar position last year.

“We were here last year. I think we lost by about the same amount with a pretty solid ball club. So, you know, we got to keep our heads up, keep moving.”

Harlan Community will look to rebound when they face the No. 1 team in Class 1A in St. Albert at the Palace on Tuesday.
