Cyclone Girls’ Looks to Finish Regular Season Strong, Prep for Postseason –

(5-21-26) – They’re getting hot at the right time.

Harlan Community girls’ soccer is has won three consecutive matches and 4 of their past 5. Their best was against a ranked Tri-Center team on Tuesday, 2-1, as they got great goalkeeping from sophomore Charlotte Mages.

“Charlotte is a very defensively minded player,” said Cyclone Girls’ Soccer Coach Chelsey Buman. “Even when she was playing defense on her back line, she always kind of drifted to that back corner and kind of covered the back corner. I know she doesn't get a lot of credit when she's on defense but she's made a lot of defensive saves for us in games so having her be our backup keeper was one of those it was kind of a no-brainer.”

Mages made 13 saves in the contest as she’s seeing extended time in net with starting keeper Ellie Albertsen recovering from an injury. Buman has been impressed with how Mages has responded to the challenge.

“Unfortunately with Ellie having her concussion, we needed someone real quick for a turnaround and she stepped up to the plate and I couldn't be prouder.”

Meanwhile, the leadership of Carly Torneten, who leads the team with 13 goals, has helped bring the team together.

“I believe Carly has always been a natural leader,” said Buman of her versatility senior. “She's just been a little bit quiet in the past years. But for her to step up to the plate and take charge of at least her offense, that's been huge. Such a reliable player.”

With just one regular season game left against Missouri Valley, Buman hopes her team will work on dictating the pace of the match and take that momentum into the postseason.
“We're really going to push the offense. We're going to try to get goals and still hold tempo still pass around and play the game our way to prepare us for the postseason.”

Cyclone girls’ soccer will play their regular season finale against Missouri Valley at Merrill Field on Friday.
