Cyclone Girls’ Soccer Dominates to Get Buman 1st Win –

(4-3-26) – It couldn’t have gone better for the first time out.

Harlan Community girls’ soccer dominated in their season opener, going on the road and shutting out Carroll, 8-0, to get new Coach Chelsey Buman her first victory for the Cyclones.

“I'm so excited,” Buman told KNOD Sports. “We did really, really good. The team played together.”

The outcome is even more impressive when you consider Harlan Community had a roster of just 13 players due to other activities that conflicted with the match.

“We only came in with a 13-man roster, which meant that a couple of players that didn't think they would see much playing time had to really step up.”

One player that stepped up impressively was senior forward Carly Torneten, who led the way with four goals to go along with 4 assists. Buman is proud to see Carly’s determination paying off.

“Carly puts in a lot of hard work. I mean, she's always asking questions. She's really particular on when she takes shots on goal and if she misses, you know, she's always asking what can I do better? How was my form? She takes everything that me and my assistant coach throw at her. She did really, really good.”

Tornaten was helped out by Lily Schechinger, who played midfielder and two goals and two assists in the contest. Buman knew Schechinger was unsure about playing a new position, but she showed how well she could handle it.

Abbie Anderson was also solid from the middle with 3 assists, while fellow sophomore Claire Bieker scored two goals.

Defensively, Harlan Community allowed just five shots on goalkeeper Ellie Albertsen as the defense showed what they’re capable of doing.

“Defense, they did phenomenal. I mean, Emercyn (Reischl), Ainsley (Mages), Lauren (Schmitz) playing a new position and then Charlotte (Mages) on the outside; they weren't letting anything back to Ellie and if it was, Ellie was ready for it.”

Buman talked about the trust her team is building and how important that is this early in the season.

“I told the girls I said you've got to trust one another Move the ball around more and they're starting to see it. They're starting to feel it on the field… they moved the ball around more. You could see the trust was there.”

Cyclone girls’ soccer will be on the road for a match against top-ranked St. Albert on Monday.
