Harlan Community's Aubree Wegner (4-28-26)
Cyclone Girls’ Track Finishes 2nd at Lady Red Relays -
(4-28-26) – They didn’t compete in every event but scored points in the one they did. At the Lady Red Relays in Missouri Valley and Harlan Community brought a small squad that ended up earning a 2nd place finish overall with 92 pts. Aubree Wegner finished 2nd in the 100m in 13.60 sec and 3rd in the 200m with a time 27.58 sec, while also helping the Sprint Med team of Ari Daniels, Brin VanBaale, and Brie Nelson to a 2nd place finish in 1:56.62 with a terrific anchor leg. Wegner gave credit to Cyclone assistant Coach James Cairney for helping her and her teammates build up their speed. “So, we gained Cairney as a coach this year and he's been a real, real good help with our sprints,” said Wegner during the meet. “Basically just short, less reps and pushing harder through each rep during practice and giving our all to get our speed up.” Wegner says it’s also helped her get in the right frame of mind to attack the oval. “All of it's mental. Just knowing that you get the opportunity to run and just leaving it all on the track. That's my mindset every race.” Julia Heslink won the 400m in 58.71 sec and 1500m in 5:01.81 for the Cyclones. They also finished 3rd in both the 4 x 400m with the team of Aspen Bieker, Paige Sonderman, Ava Freund and Josie Sonderman with a time of 4:24.64 the 4 x 800m with Bieker, Freund, Josie Sonderman, and Ashlyn Rau posting a season-best time of 10:26.08. Sadie Alberti also posted a season-best time in the 3000m in 12:44.37 to finish 5th. Daniels was 4th in the 100m hurdles with at time of 16.93, her first sub-17 sec run in the event this year. As so many Cyclone athletes continue to improve and hit new season-highs, Wegner talked about the goals she still has her eye on before the season concludes. “One of my main goals is to break a minute in the 400m, even though times don't show on paper or anything. But for my splits, I really want to dip into the 50s and maybe get my open 200m into the 26 sec (range) at some point.” Harlan Community track will next compete at the Underwood Co-Ed Relays on Thursday.
