Cyclone SB Dominated by Atlantic, 11-1 –

(6-20-24) – The competitiveness was there, but some teams are just that good.

Atlantic used a 6-run 2nd to beat Harlan Community softball 11-1 in 5 innings on Thursday.

“I think the positive is that we came out right away and put a little pressure on them,” said Cyclone Assistant Coach Toshia Kasperbauer following the game. “When we got a couple of hits and I got some runners on base and then they actually made a couple errors. So, I think right there we put a little pressure on which kind of gave them a little bit of confidence knowing that they can actually make contact with the ball and do what they need to do at the plate.”

The Cyclones got their only run off an error in the 1st, when Lauren Schmitz came around to score after reaching on an error to start the game. It made the score 2-1 at the time.

That would be as close as Harlan Community would get.

The crooked number in the 2nd by Atlantic was capped off by a Lila Wiederstein 2-run homer that gave the Trojans an 8-1 lead. Harlan Community’s Lauren Schmitz would come in to relieve Camryn Goshorn and pitched strong, giving up just 3 runs despite allowing 7 hits over 3.2 innings.

“Lauren keeps the ball around the plate, which can be a positive at times, but then also you know they she usually gives up a few more hits than what Camryn does,” said Kasperbauer. “The thing she can mix up in there most of the time is she can throw that change up for a strike and that is that helps her to keep those hitters off balance.”

Carleigh Goshorn has been hot on the plate and Kasperbauer likes her approach… even if she doesn’t want to talk about it and jinx anything.

“We don’t talk about that,” Kasperbauer said not wanting to jinx her 1st basemen. “Carleigh came out last night and had a couple hits last night. I looked at maybe moving her up in the batting order, but sometimes that also plays mind games, you know? So, I sat her back where she has usually been here the last couple of games and my gosh, she came out and got a couple of hits for us tonight. So we need to feed off of that and keep that momentum going down there at the bottom of the batting order so we can come right back to the top and get some hits or get some bunts, lay some bunts down to move some people around.”

Harlan Community will wrap up their week with their 3rd trip to Council Bluffs this week when they play at St. Albert Friday.
