Cyclone Sweep Against Atlantic in Basketball -

(1-17-25) – The brooms were out at the Palace on Friday.

The Harlan Community boys’ rolled to a 71-52 victory over Atlantic while the Cyclones girls’ hung after getting a good fight from the Trojans, earning a 44-32 win.

Harlan Community boys’ basketball Coach Mitch Osborn liked how his team played against the Trojans.

“Just a good solid win at home. The crowd was terrific. Great, big crowd. You know, Atlantic is better than there in the record indicated, but our kids be played hard.”

Kobe Klaassen finished with 21 pts and 10 boards and 6 assists. Klaassen talked about getting off to a fast start against their Hawkeye Ten rivals.

“You know, we've been starting kind of slow this past few quarters and we just wanted to get out, run the ball and push and not look back. We had a lead to start. We just wanted to keep pushing.”

Dallas McDowell led the Cyclones with 26 points as they ended their 3-game losing streak. The Trojans got 14 from Kinnick Juhl.

In the girls’ contest, Addi Wicks had 11 points off the bench, all in the 2nd half to help Harlan Community break open a tight game. Wicks said all she needed to do was keep shooting.

“First half wasn't so good for me. I wasn't making anything and then my teammates told me that I need to keep shooting, and they helped boost my confidence. Then I made a couple and I felt more confident, so I just kept shooting.”

Coach Zach Klaassen knows his team needs to continue to shoot the ball when the opportunity arises in games.

“This just got to be like that, Klaassen told KNOD Sport following the game. “If you're open, you got to catch and release and let it go. We talked about the first half at halftime. A couple time we had a couple girls wide open. Instead they decide, throw it into the middle of traffic and we give up turnovers there. At least if we miss, we might get (offensive) board and put back. (But) turnovers, we have zero chance of accomplishing anything. So, hopefully that resonated with a few them.”

The Cyclones were led by Aubrey Schwieso with 16 points.

The Trojans Paytn Harter scored had 14 and set the Atlantic career scoring mark in the process.
