Cyclone Track Earns 3rd Place Finish for Girls’, 4th for Boys’ at Monarch Relays –

(4-3-25) – Consistency is showing early in the season for Cyclone track.

Harlan Community competed at the Monarch Relays with the girls, finishing 3rd overall with 122 points and the boys’ finishing 4th with 95 points.

For the Cyclone boys’, Jeffery Gross and Erik Heslink finished 1st & 3rd, respectively, in the 3200M. Gross talked about his preparation that’s led to his hot start.

“I have been putting on the miles and I was dealing with injuries in cross country and I wanted to get myself better and not have these injuries like I had in cross.”

Cyclone Boys’ Track Coach Sam Brummer like how his young distance runners moved through the field.

“The one thing we've really been preaching for like last couple years with that race is you gotta get out. It is a long race and it's an endurance race, but if you can get out and get out of the muck, so to speak and kind of run the race, you want to instead of running the race you're forced to that makes a huge difference.”

Heslink talked about having Gross to compete against at meets.

“It's definitely great to have someone to run off of on your own team so you can striving to get better every meet with them.”

It was another pair of wins in the both the 3000M and 1500M by the Cyclones Lindsey Sonderman while Abby Broeckelman took home a 2nd place finish in the 400M hurdles. Brockelman talked with KNOD Sports about what she’s done to improve herself in the hurdles.

“We've been doing a lot more distance and volume workouts I think helped me finish it. Just working on the approach to the hurdles and attacking better.”

Senior Sonderman talked about building a team camaraderie.

“Just being one as a team. It's easy that label yourself as a sprinter, a distance runner, but we're all one family and we should have each other’s back.”

Harlan Community boys’ track will next compete in Glenwood on Tuesday while the girls’ will host the Koos Relays at Merrill Field on Thursday.
