Cyclones BB Sweeps Season Series Over Denison-Schleswig –

(1-28-25) – The Highway 59 rivalry in the Hawkeye 10 is won by the south this basketball season.

Harlan Community earned a doubleheader sweep of Denison-Schleswig Tuesday with boys’ winning 67-45 and the girls’ taking a 65-25 decision.

The Cyclone boys’ struggled in the first half and were down by 7 in the 2nd qtr before making a defensive change that shutdown the Monarchs and allowed the Cyclones to flip the script and pull away.

“We did the diamond and one press,” Harlan Community boys’ Coach Mitch Osborn said after the game. “We started man to man. I wanted just to get us moving right away and we played 1-3-1 and we played 2-3 and so we just mixed it up.”

Dallas McDowell had 25 points in the contest. He talked with KNOD Sports about what led to his hot performance.

“Just attacking the rim hard and playing with confidence. You know getting the screens from the bigs and sometimes they’ll slip and you give the ball to them or just have an open lane, take it to the hoop.”

Kobe Klaassen added 21 points and 8 rebounds for Harlan Community. Denison-Schleswig got 16 points from Blaine Grady in the loss.

In the girls’ contest, Molly Swensen added 14 points and 8 steals. Swensen says her confidence in her teammates allows her to be aggressive defensively.

“Just knowing that my teammates are there,  that if I do miss the ball or if I get out of my position that they’re there to help me.”

Cyclone Coach Zach Klaassen liked Swensen’s performance on both ends of the floor.

“You know, defensively she's always active and getting tips and stuff like that. It was kind of nice to see her a couple of times, she’d get the steal and take it. I wish she’d take it every time, but, you know, it’s just not in the cards yet. Maybe we’ll get there.”

Grace Albertsen had 14 points and Kenzley Bruck added 10 for Harlan Community as they’ve now won 6 straight. Aubrey Schwieso scored a game-high 21 pts and is now 23 away from 1000 on her career.
