Cyclones Girls’ Soccer Confident with New Coach Buman at Helm -

(3-19-26) – Harlan Community’s new girls’ soccer coach has hometown roots.

“I am a HCHS high school graduate, so I played for the Cyclones,” said new Cyclone Coach Chelsey Buman. “It's a surreal feeling to be back and coaching the Cyclones since I did play for them. I'm also involved in the youth program, so I coach down there. It'll be a big change to coach the high school soccer team, but I am very, very excited.”

Buman takes over a Cyclone team that finished 9-9-1 a season ago and loss the school’s all-time leading scorer in Aubrey Schwieso and their starting goaltender Grace Albertsen to graduation.

Those losses and a new coach mean changes for the returning squad. Buman says some players may play positions they’re not used to as a result, but has the confidence in her players to adjust.

“I do get a couple of nervous glances and worry looks and I told them, ‘Hey, it's fine. If it doesn't work, we can always put you back to where you feel comfortable.’ However, one thing I've always told them is, remember that I see the game differently… Being in that keeper position, I've seen the entire field going all at the same time. I know what works and what doesn't.”

Senior Carly Torneten and sophomore Abbie Anderson return as the leading scorers for Harlan Community, each scoring 8 goals in 2025. Buman like what she’s seen from both players.

“I've seen a lot out of both Abby and Carly. I have a lot of confidence in them. They know how to get in and out of sticky situations. There's a lot of trust between the two of them.”

Buman also has confidence in goalkeeper Ellie Albertsen, who will replace her sister between the pipes. She like Albertsen’s willingness to learn and knows that will be helpful as she tries to fill her sister’s shoes.

“Ellie is very, very coachable. She's down to try new things. I think with me having past school experience, I can relay some of that knowledge onto her. As long as she's aggressive in the goal, I think she'll be fine.”

Harlan Community girls’ soccer will start their 2026 season with a scrimmage at the Carroll Jamboree on March 31st.
