Cyclones Split Doubleheader with Rival Denison-Schleswig -

(1-24-23) – A dominating victory for the Cyclone girls’ while boys’ let one slip away.

Harlan Community girls’ got 22 pts a piece from Erica Rust & Aubrey Schweiso as they cruised to a 63-38 win over Denison-Schleswig while the Harlan Community boys’ fell in overtime to Denison-Schleswig 69-63 at the Palace Tuesday night.

The girls’ game saw the Cyclones jump out to a 20 pt halftime lead as they fed the ball in down low to Rust for easy buckets, while Schweiso would get 4 of their 6 three-pointers on the game.

“I think it was definitely a great performance by us,” Schweiso told KNOD Sports postgame. “I think we kept the ball moving a lot, spread the floor, and ran when we had the good shot.”

Coach Zach Klaassen was pleased his team’s intensity early on.

“I thought we came out with a lot of energy. I thought ball moved better than it has the last couple games.”

Kiana Schulz had 16 pts to lead the Monarchs while teammate Olivia Meyer had 15. The two combined for 8 of Denison-Schleswig’s 9 threes on the evening.

In the boys’ game, Harlan Community built up 10 pt lead going into the 4th and extended it to 14 with 4:57 left in the game, when Brad Curren was called for charge that seemed to energize the Monarchs. Denison-Schleswig went on a 18-4 run from that point, including a scoop shot by Carson Seuntjens to tie the game at 61 and send it to overtime.

In the extra session, Luke Weibers would hit a big 3-pointer to make it a two-possession game for the Monarchs. Five of Weiber’s game-high 23 pts would be in overtime.

Jacob Birch had a double-double with 15 pts and 13 rebounds for Harlan Community, while Brad Curren led the way with 18.
