Girls Win, Boys Fall to Give Cyclone BB Split with LC -

(1-7-25) – The Cyclones trip to Council Bluffs Tuesday took them to Splitsville.

The Harlan Community girls fought though a tough battle to earn a 55-44 victory over Lewis Central, while the host’s boys overcame an early deficit to win the night cap 56-44, to split the double dip.

Kenzley Bruck had 10 points and 3 of the team’s 13 assists, doing a fantastic job working the ball down low to give Grace Albertsen. Bruck feels the camaraderie this team has allows them to be creative on the court.
“We just worked so well together, and sometimes it's not even like a set play, but we just are so connected that we can just throw a pass and it’ll just go right to it.”

Cyclone Coach Zach Klaassen know the importance of getting the victory over a storied rival.

“This is a tough gym to play in, not only because of the gym and the crowds, but because there's quality opponent on the other side as well. It's a big win for us, should give us a little bit of momentum going into Friday night.”

Albertsen had a double-double for Harlan Community with 19 points and 10 boards while Molly Swensen scored 14 and had 5 steals. The defense forced 15 turnovers, including 10 steals, while having 4 blocks

Macie Vetter led Lewis Central with 16 pts.

The Harlan Community boys’ got out to an early lead against Lewis Central but the Titans went on a 13-0 first half run to take control of the game. Cyclone Coach Mitch Osborn said scoring droughts are becoming an issue.

“We had a 4 minute span (where) we don't score and then we had a second scoring drought and that was to start the 3rd quarter. And our goal is to come (hard) out that first three (minutes). It’s just been a backbreaker all season. At this point, we gotta get that turned around.”

The Cyclones were also out rebounded 28 to 12, including 9 offensive boards for the Titans. Osborn says players have to step up to help supporter the bigs down low.

“Our guys in the weak side block were not making contact and they were giving up too much ground, but also our guards in the 2-3 zone. It was good, except they were letting guys fly in from the outside and our three guys down low were doing a good job boxing out at that point, but we got to have our guards helping us.”

The loss snapped Harlan Community’s 3-game win streak. Kobe Klaassen had 20 points to lead the Cyclones while teammate Jozef Reisz had 14.

The Titans got 12 pts & 10 rebounds from Charles Schaben.

Both Harlan Community basketball teams will host St. Albert at the Palace on Friday night.
