![]() Girls’ 2nd, Boys’ 4th as Cyclone Track Solid at Carroll Early Bird -
(3-31-25) – A promising start outside for Cyclone track & field. Harlan Community teams participated in the Carroll Early Bird on Thursday with the girls’ finishing 2nd overall with 105 points and the Cyclone boys’, in their first competition of the season, were 4th with 72 points. The Cyclone girls’ team of Abby Broeckelman, Ellerie Nelson, Allie Anderson, and Lindsey Sonderman won the Distance Medley with a time of 4:33.40 while Sonderman won the 1500M at 4:48.84, Jaylee Schmitz won the 100M hurdles in 17.66 seconds, and Aspen Bieker took the 400M dash with a time of 1:06.09. Harlan Community Girls’ Track Coach Jenny Hamilton is impressed with the progress Bieker is making. “Aspen is a freshman and she is super open-minded and just willing to try whatever we ask of her and so should we put her in that open 400M, which was a turnaround because she ran the 4x800M earlier and ended up winning it and she was excited and happy about that.” Although she didn’t finish in the points, Hamilton liked the performance of Bristol Loudy in her field events, surpassing her personal bests in the shot put (27-05.50) & discus (90-08). “Bristol is one who is picking up right where she left off last season and that's awesome. So she'll continue to grow as long as she keeps working at that.” On the boys’ side, it was a great season start for Cyclone distance runners Jeffery Gross & Erik Heslink. The duo came in 1-2 in the 3200M with times of 10:32.71 & 11:06.20 respectively. “I think they're gonna take a hold of those spots, you know, in the in the 3200M and the 1600M respectively. You know, building off some success that they had in the cross-country season,” Harlan Community Boys’ Track Coach Sam Brummer told KNOD Sports. “Each sport has its own little differences, I guess, and, you know, for track we still got to work on speed aspect even though they’re running two miles.” Gross was 3rd in the 1600M while Heslink finished 8th. Brummer was also happy with how his athletes performed in the team events, finishing 2nd in the Sprint Medley with a time of 1:39.23 and 3rd place finishes in the Distance Medley, 4x200M, and 4x400M “Just happy to see that stick get around, you know, especially when you different relay combos and different kids in different spots and situations, you just want to see that stick go around. And so we didn't drop any and that was a good sign. So we had that bugaboo last year at state, so we're hoping to kind of tie up those loose ends.” Both Cyclone track teams will head to Denison on Thursday for the Monarch Co-Ed.
