Great H10 Championships has Cyclone Boys’ Tennis Ready for District Play –

(5-13-26) – You get a point! You get a point! EVERYBODY gets a point!

That’s what happened to Harlan Community Boys’ Tennis team at the Hawkeye Ten Championships Tuesday, as every player participated in a placement match giving the Cyclones 14 pts and a 5th place finish overall.

Harlan Community Boys’ Tennis Coach Michael Rueschenberg was impressed with how well his team played.

“Really really really awesome day by our team,” said Rueschenberg following the meet. “We're really happy with the fifth place finish in scoring that many points. Scoring 14 points as a team, that was a good performance from us.”

The best run by was by the doubles team of Jamison Arentson and Dale Scheuring in the No. 2 Doubles Bracket. The duo won their first match 8-6 over Ethan Strunk and Damien Goodman of Red Oak and then the quarterfinals 8-5 over Monte Smith and Brock Goodrich of Atlantic, took their semifinals match against Clarinda’s Ian Smith and Eli Cox, 8-3 before falling to Shenandoah’s Ryan Lawrence and Levi Rystrom in the championship match, 8-3, to finish 2nd overall.

Rueschenberg felt the confidence between them growing after such a strong start.

“They just kept winning and winning. And that's winning points, winning games, winning each match. And they just kept plugging away, plugging away, plugging away. And at the end of the day, it was obviously like, why can't they win the whole thing?”

In No. 1 Doubles, Jonas Reynolds and Ramsey Hussing fought to a 9-8 win over Glenwood’s Myles Longmeyer and Grahm Newberry in the consolation round, then beat Creston’s Dylan Dornack and CT Stalker, 8-1, to finish 7th.

Singles play, Number 1 Kobe Klaassen fell in his opening match, but won his first consolation match against Atlantic’s Rayden Wheeler, 8-5, and would finish 8th.

Caden Herbst won his consolation match against Cesar Cardona of Denison-Schleswig, 8-2 after dropping his opening round match the Number 2 singles bracket, then beat Jackson Perdue of Red Oak, 8-1, then took out Cole Holcombe of Lewis Central, 8-2 to finish 5th.

The Hawkeye Ten Championships actually gave Rueschenberg and his team a look at many of the teams they’ll face in the district tournament. But, Rueschenberg says his athletes need to worry about what they can control.

“We kind of have to just focus on us. What's the best doubles team and the best singles lineups? That will give us the best chance of qualifying for the State Tournament. And then we just have to kind of go focus on that. At this point in the season, we're not introducing anything new. We're not changing anything crazy. We're just refining skills, keeping a few of those repetitions to make sure we don't get rusty before Saturday.”

Next up for Cyclone Boys’ Tennis is the District Meet play in Red Oak on Saturday.
