Harlan Community Boys’ Soccer Holds on for Win over Lo-Ma, 2-0 -

(5-12-26) – A quick start and then hold on. That was the formula for Harlan Community boys’ soccer as a pair of early goals would hold up to give them a 2-0 victory over Logan-Magnolia at Merrill Field Tuesday night.

The scoring got started by Alex Medina-Ortiz with his deflection in the first couple minutes of the match. Medina-Ortiz talked about putting his team up early.

“Right away at the beginning, kind of got off to a good start. Nice through ball by Cody and Will. Just tapped it in right next to the goalie. Pretty good.”

Cyclone Coach Levi Culp was pleased with how his team played in this contest.

“I wanted them to get on goal, shoot the ball a lot early and get a lead so that we could defend it.”

The defense was sharp, especially with goalkeeper Lucas Paulsen, who made 9 saves on the evening. Culp said it was his best game of the season and he likes being able to trust him between the pipes.

“He does great. He makes the saves he needs to. He's brave, communicates everything. But the stuff he's progressing is when we pass it to him, he finds the next pass and he doesn't just boot it away and he's more calm on it.”

“I'm very confident with Lucas back there,” added Doolin Vaughn, who scored the 2nd goal for the Cyclones. “He's very good. We still got him for another year.”

For Culp, who coached Logan-Magnolia for the last couple of seasons, the win was bittersweet for him.

“I just wasn't looking forward to it. But it was a great game. I'm glad that we were able to keep it controlled for the most part and I mean, I'm just glad I'm able to be part of such a huge soccer community in two different areas. It's wonderful.”

Harlan Community will next take on Atlantic in their final home game of the regular season on Thursday.
