Harlan Community Boys’ Tennis Wins 3rd Straight, Beats Glenwood, 5-4 -

(4-21-26) – It went to “overtime” but the Cyclones held on for a historic win.

Harlan Community needed to win their final doubles match in a tiebreaker to earn a 5-4 win over Glenwood for their third consecutive dual victory.

“We just needed one more win and we dropped the first two doubles matches,” said Cyclone Co-Coach Michael Rueschenberg. “Then at #1 doubles of Kobe Klassen and Jonas Reynolds, we actually went into a tiebreaker. It was tied 8-8, and then they ended up pulling it out. They won 7-5 in the tiebreaker, so then we won the meet 5-4. And I think just that competitiveness is what we're doing a really good job with in this last winning streak of our three duels.”

“We blew it late in that last match for them to force tiebreaker,” Klaassen explained after the match. “So we knew they had a lot of momentum and we just had to stop them.”

Reynolds, who is playing in his first season of Harlan Community tennis as a senior, is enjoying his time with this team and relishing in their success.

“The vibes of the varsity guys, we're all just out here having fun and we just try to make the most of every meet. And I know that's my goal because it's my last year.”

Rueschenberg felt Klaassen’s communication with Reynolds during the contest was key to winning their tiebreaker. He appreciates the leadership and Klaassen shows on the court… in a game that doesn’t allow coaches much conversation with players during matches.

“Today, there were two or three points that we won by and eked out that won us the meet. So being able to have someone else kind of have that leadership on the court is important.”

Klaassen, who’s in his second season with Cyclone tennis, realizes what this win streak means to the team.

“Last year, we only had two wins, so it means a lot to be in our fifth game of the season and already have more than that, so I think we all believe we can do it. Full head of steam.”

With their first three dual winning-streak in school history, Rueschenberg knows that the confidence his team is building will benefit them as the season winds down.

“Confidence is everything. It just shows them that they can do it. And we're doing this now against conference opponents as well.”

Harlan Community will look to continue their winning ways when they play St. Albert on Friday.
