(5-8-25) – A preview of state track qualifying shows some promise… and some catching up to do. The Hawkeye 10 Conference Championships took place in Treynor on Thursday and the Harlan Community girls’ earned a 5th place finish with 68 pts. Lindsey Sonderman had 2nd place finishes in the 1500M and 3000M while Ashlyn Rau finished 3rd and 4th respectively in each event. Aubree Wegner had an outstanding meet, finishing 3rd in the high jump and 5th in the 400M, while helping the 4x400M relay to a 4th place finish. “I thought we had a very, very good meet,” said Cyclone Girls’ Track Coach Jenny Hamilton. “We take a lot of pride in how we compete in the conference. We're blessed to be part of a really competitive conference.” St. Albert’s Lili Denton and Clarinda’s Jerzee Knight were the stars of the Hawkeye 10 Championships, each winning three individual events, with Denton taking the 800M, 1500M, and 3000M, and Knight winning the 100M, 200M, and 400M. Glenwood was the girls’ overall champion with 141.5 pts. The competition has Hamilton’s girls ready for state qualifying. “We're going to see good competition, that's for sure, especially in the mid distance and distance races, which is probably our strength as a team. So, I guess we're just looking to continue to peak at the right time.” Boys Hawkeye 10 Championship saw Harlan Community finish with 30 pts, for a 9th place finish. The 4x400M relay team of Foxx Argotsinger, Jozef Reisz, Sam Shields, and Hagen Sorensen took 4th place, while Argotsinger got 5th in the 400M and Jeffery Gross was 5th in the 3200M. Injuries and changes prevented the Cyclones from scoring higher, according to Coach Sam Brummer. “To the best of our ability, you know, we did do some good things and ran some good splits and just weren't able to accumulate the points that maybe we’re accustomed to doing.” Lewis Central took the boys’ conference title with 162 pts, with the Titans Kevin Coots taking the 1600M and 3200M. Brummer knows State Qualifying will be difficult with the competition they’ll face, but also feels there’s opportunities for his athletes to succeed. “To qualify, you know, you get Top-2 and that's going to be really hard to do for us and a lot of teams. But, I think in our district the wild cards will have a lot of qualifiers from those because I think our district is just going to be so, so fast.” The Harlan Community track team will participate in the State Qualifying Meet in Glenwood on Thursday.
