HC Boys’ Tennis Gets Dominating Win Over Audubon –

(4-17-26) – A short-handed Audubon boys’ tennis team allowed Harlan Community to give some opportunities for their athletes to play at higher positions in the lineup as they cruised to a 9-0 win Thursday.

Since the Wheelers only have four players, Cyclones Co-Coach Michael Rueschenberg knew this was a chance for some of his athletes get a chance against tougher competition in singles play.

“We kind of finagled with our singles lineup a little bit by just dropping our number one and two. So we gave Kobe (Klaassen) and Caden (Herbst) the afternoon off from singles, which was fine. We had played a lot of tennis this week… So, it was good for Kobe and Caden to get a little bit of rest, and then it was great for Jonas (Reynolds) to bump up to the Number 1 spot and everybody below him to bump up a couple spots, just to give them a little bit more competitiveness and a little bit more challenge playing at a position that they haven't been playing this season.”

Reynolds won his match 8-1 over Kayden Otten, while Ramsey Hussing was No. 2 and beat Fred Harris 8-6, while Jameson Arentson and Dale Scheuring won their matches over Karl Nagel and Nathan Campeau respectively by identical 8-0 scores.

The efficiency of his team against Audubon was impressive to Rueschenberg and Co-Coach Dillon Stane.

“We only lost eight total games as a team, and I think six of them came in one singles match. So, overall, in the other matches, we only lost two total games, which was great.”

Rueschenberg knows these opportunities for his less-experienced athletes will be valuable as the season continues.

“I think it's important, especially when we get to postseason play. It's important for the guys to, you know, remember oh, I did play at the Number 1 spot at one point this season and I played well and things like that. So, when we get into postseason bracket play and they think, oh, I matched up with the Number 3 from somebody else's team. Well, you DID play a Number 3 this year. You know, I know you usually play Number 5, but you have played Number 3 and it went well.”

Another busy week for Cyclone boys' tennis as they have home duals with Kuemper Catholic on Monday followed by Glenwood on Tuesday.
