HC Girls’ Tennis Prepares for Regionals Wed –

(9-15-25) – In a blink of an eye, regionals are here.

High school girls’ tennis enters regional play this week and Harlan Community is trying to ride a successful performance at the Hawkeye Ten Conference tournament

Harlan Community Girls’ Tennis Coach Michael Rueschenberg was impressed how Rebekah Christensen, who finished 5th at the Hawkeye Ten in #2 singles, battled her way through the tournament.

“She really just was a fighter,” Rueschenberg said of her performance. “She played awesome. Many people from other teams, including a lot of opposing coaches just said that Rebecca looks like she has just improved so much over the course of the season and I completely agree.”

Christensen went 4-1 at the Hawkeye Ten tournament. She was driven to compete as hard as possible.

“I really remembered that I had to push myself to work really hard and fight and not give up during all of my matches.”

The Cyclones also received a 3rd place finish from the doubles duo of Mariejose Guerrero & Lauren Schmitz. Guerrero talked about the camaraderie she’s built with her doubles partner.

“Lauren is like very consistent on the net and then I'm really good with my ground strokes. So that's our strategy. I'm basically in the back and then Lauren at the front.”

Schmitz, a senior who never played tennis before this season due to commitments to other spring sports, feels fortunate to be able to play the sport its move to the fall.

“Being out here, just after a long day, it's a lot better than like, say, last year I didn't have a fall sport, that kind of just made me like, ‘What am I doing?’ because I haven't had a season without a sport until that last year, so it helps to come back out and be active again.”

The Cyclones will begin regional play on Wednesday in Atlantic.
