HC Tennis Falls to Denison-Schleswig –

(4-10-25) – Tough sweep for Cyclone tennis Thursday.

Harlan Community girls’ tennis hosted Denison-Schleswig but fell short in their season opener, falling by a 5-4 final. Meanwhile, the Cyclone boys’ traveled to face the Monarchs, but couldn’t continue their hot start, falling 9-0.

The Cyclones Naia Ojeda with a pair of wins for the girls’, defeating Abbey Meseck in her individual match 8-3, and teaming up with Anastacia Key to beat Meseck and Leila Jaime in doubles, 8-2. Coach Michael Rueschenberg likes the intelligence Ojeda has shown early on.

“She came in and she already had all the basics down and even some of the more advanced skills. She was not someone that we really had to teach much of the tennis basics too. She's been playing for long enough that that's what makes her so good. She already was a very, very good player and now she's just trying to take her game to the next level.”

Rueschenberg believes his boys’ team is still learning after a couple of rough outings following a season opening win.

“I think the biggest thing would just be learning from this experience, a better skill level that we went up against and realizing that we still have a lot of room to grow and we still have a lot of things that we need to do better and then just learning to win those big points, those most valuable, important points.”

Cyclone tennis will take on Lewis Central on Tuesday with the boys’ competing at home and the girls’ on the road.
