Heartbreaking Loss for Lo-Ma Baseball in Substate Final to RSM, 3-2 -

(7-14-26) – Three sac flies. That’s all to end the Panthers’ season.

Logan-Magnolia’s rally in the 7th came up short as the left the tying run 90ft away in a 3-2 loss to Remsen St. Mary’s in the 1A-Substate 1 Championship Game on Tuesday at Sioux City East High School.

“I think this game was kind of, you know, a testament to our season,” said Panthers Coach Kurtis Hinkel. “We played tough. They're a good team. Winnable ball game for us. We kept ourselves in it and gave ourselves chances and gave ourselves a chance at the end. We just came up short.”

Lo-Ma struck first with an RBI single by Cale Cunard in the 1st inning, but the Hawks would tie it in the bottom of the inning on a Dalton Klein sac fly. They’d get two more sac flies, from Blade Nelson in the 4th and Ty Schuttpelz in the 6th, for all their scoring.

Klein was shutting down the Panthers from the hill, retiring 11 in a row at one point. The Remsen St. Mary starter struck out 8 and gave up just four hits while walking one.

Logan-Magnolia tried to keep their season alive with a rally in the 7th. After getting back-to-back base hits from Aiden King and Cunard to start the inning. Kuhlman move the runners over and Mason Van Iten hit into a fielder’s choice to drive in King. Van Iten then stole two bases to get to third before Macklin Loftus struck out to end the contest.

Van Iten started the game and pitched solid, giving up just two runs on 5 hits. King finished to the contest on the mound for the Panthers, giving up 1 run on 1 hit with two strikeouts.

Hinkel likes that the majority of his team is returning this year, but feels bad for seniors Jason Kastner and Eli Esser as their high school careers come to an end.

“I mean, it's great to have that in our back pocket. You know, you feel bad for Eli and Jason. They've battled for five years here and got better and kept the wine moving for us. But the future's bright.”

Logan-Magnolia’s season ends with a record of 25-6.
