Klaassen Sees Improvements in Cyclone Girls’ Basketball -

(1-5-26) – Things seem to be coming around for the Cyclone girls’ basketball team.

In their final game before the holiday break, Harlan Community forced 19 steals and ripped down 48 rebounds in their 79-21 win over Red Oak. Coach Zach Klaassen was pleased to see his team put together solid games in those categories.

“I know the games we've lost, we've been on the opposite side of that bracket, and it's obviously cost us a few wins and just gets the game a little too far out of control to make a run at the end. So it was good to see us on the right side of those two columns the other night.”

While he’s seen some improvements, the half-court offense is something that was going to be a focus of their holiday break workouts.

“I think the one thing that we've really focused on and put a lot more time into is the half court offense and it seems like it's going a little bit better. The ball seems to be moving a little bit more and we're not wasting dribbles. We talk about if you're going to dribble in the half court, it's got to be towards the hoop and there for a while, we're just kind of dribbling around the arc and just not putting any pressure on the defense at all and just making them comfortable.”

Klaassen also wants his players to concentrate on protecting the ball and being more aggressive on the boards.

“We're going to talk about it until they fix themselves or we fix it, whatever has to happen. But if we want to win against good teams, those two things have to be taken care of.”

Harlan Community girls’ basketball will host Lewis Central at The Palace in Harlan on Tuesday to try and see their hard work over the break has paid off.
