“Twin Power” Leads Cyclone Girls’ Soccer to Win over Lo-Ma on Senior Night –

(5-12-26) – It just took one, to lead to an offensive explosion.

After a slow start, Aspen Bieker had two of the Harlan Community’s five 2nd half goals in their 6-0 win over Logan-Magnolia. Bieker talked about those goals that help break the game open.

“My teammates set me up really well. It was fun passing around with them and eventually we just got the right shots off and it was really fun.”

One of the match ups Aspen had was with her twin sister, Claire Bieker, who also scored for the Cyclones. Harlan Community Coach Chelsey Buman said the pair approached her about putting them together on the pitch.

“Actually, the twins came up to me today and asked if they could both be on the front line together and I said, why not? So, when they scored their goal, I kind of made a comment about ‘Twin Power.’”

Buman likes what Aspen brings to her team.

“She's kind of a spark to the entire team. She plays really aggressively, plays her spot, does anything and everything we ask her to do. She is... really feisty.”

Charlotte Mages start in goal for the Cyclones as they were playing without starting goalkeeper Ellie Albertsen, who suffered a concussion against Lewis Central on Monday. Buman said it was an incident that shook up her team.

“When something like that happens, that's a big scare for the team. But they were ready tonight. They came out swinging and they weren't letting Charlotte do much of anything back there, which is always nice to see.”

Abbie Anderson scored two goals for Harlan Community and senior Carly Torneten got a goal on Senior Night. Torneten said she was determined to put on in the net.

“I really wanted one. That first half was a little frustrating, I think, but second-half I wanted to go get one and had to push a couple people out of the way to go get it.”

Torneten also talked about what it’s meant to be a Cyclone.

“I think a lot of us take a lot of pride in wearing a cyclone jersey and I think it'll be hard to leave behind, but I think everybody out here behind us with their phones, that's what it's all about. Everybody showing up and it means A lot.”

Lauren Schmitz, Emercyn Reichl, and Lily Schechinger were the other seniors honored before the game. They each had their own thoughts of about playing for Harlan Community.

“I would say having a strong community behind you,” said Schmitz after contest surrounded by family and friends. “Every day as a Cyclone, I feel like all the parents are rooting, are cheering us on. Like the boys in the stands, I always hear somebody out there and it's really special to have that competitive dynamic pushing me forward even when it's hard.”

“It means to work hard and support your teammates and play together,” said Schechinger.

“I would just say working hard also,” Reischl agreed. “Just because each day we come to practice and we do it for each other.”

The Cyclone girls’ are now 6-6 on the season and they’ll face Creston on Friday.
