Logan-Magnolia BB Falls in State Quarterfinals to Saint Ansgar, 3-1 -

(7-21-25) – They came in unafraid… but it wasn’t quite enough.

Logan-Magnolia making their first appearance at the State Baseball tournament in school history, took on Saint Ansgar in the Class 1A Quarterfinals and couldn’t generate enough offense against a tough pitcher on the mound, falling by a final of 3-1.

The Panthers showed no fear getting off to a quick start. Cale Cunard’s RBI double in the 1st inning gave Logan-Magnolia the early lead.

“I go into each at-bat today (and) I just believe that I can hit every single pitch that came and I just never stepped down from that approach. No matter what the count was, I believed that I could put the bat on the ball and send it places and that’s what I did.”

But that would be all their offense on this night. Saint Ansgar pitcher Jayce Schwiesow would allow just 2 more hits the rest of the way while striking out 10 in 6 2/3 innings.

The Saints tied the game in the 3rd when they loaded the bases with 2 outs and with a walk, a single, and back-to-back hit-by-pitch, the second of which to Ryker Hoffman, allowed a run to come home.

Saint Ansgar then continued to chip away in the 4th as several decisions by Saints Coach Devin Schwiesow paid off. Following a led off single by Mason Beland, Connor Mullenbach came would pinch hit with a 1-0 count and get down a two-strike bunt that was throw wide of 1st to allow runners at 1st & 2nd with nobody out. A sacrifice by another pinch hitter, Zade Schell, had runners at 2nd & 3rd with one out.

Joe Clevenger would get an RBI fielder’s choice and Anthony Schnable would follow with an RBI single to give the Saints a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Panther Coach Kurtis Hinkel was pleased with how hard his team played.

“Happy with the guys, I mean, we didn't lay down for them. We fought the whole time. I thought we did all right. Certainly, hope this isn't the last time that we make it down here and they got a little taste of it.”

Lo-Ma’s Kalab Kuhl went 5 innings and gave up just one earned run while striking out 4 and also was 2 for 2 at the plate and scored the team’s only run. He talked about playing on Iowa High School Baseball’s biggest stage in his senior season.

“We made history in our school and just getting the opportunity to come out here and compete. It was a lot of fun and there's nobody I'd rather have done it with. It was a great experience and I really enjoyed it.”

Cunard says he loved being a part of such a successful team.

“Such a memorable season, from either going to McDonald's after the game or just hanging with the guys, it was so memorable and the fact that we could win games on the way and make it out to the state tournament is incredible.”

Hinkel hopes this is only the beginning of the Panthers trips to the State Tournament.

“I just hope that people know that… we weren’t hanging our hat on just coming here. We wanted to make some noise.”

Logan-Magnolia finished their baseball season 21-6.
