Lots of Fight Seen from Cyclones BKB in DH Split with Glenwood –

(1-13-26) – They never gave up and showed their heart and soul.

It worked for the Harlan Community girls’ basketball team, who erased a 15-pt 1st half deficit, to defeat Glenwood, 55-52. The Cyclone boys’, however, battled but came up short, falling by a final of 64-58.

The Cyclone girls’ took it down to the final seconds as Avery Manz hit two free throws with 28.7 seconds left to put her team up for good. Manz talked about the pressure of hitting those shots at such a crucial moment in the game.

“I kind of went into those free throws, like taking deep breaths, like saying I can do this because I knew I wanted to win and I know the team wanted to win. So, I just had to put them in, take deep breaths, and well, they went in.”

Harlan Community used a 19-5 run in the middle of the game to overcome an early 15-point deficit, led by guard Brin VanBaale.

“Really just picking up the energy, communicating, sharing the ball, running an offense, passing, it all really helped us,” VanBaale said of the run that began late in 1st half. “And once that shot went in, our energy picked up and it just snowballed from there.”

VanBaale finished the game with 21 pts. Cyclone Coach Zach Klaassen was impressed with her leadership in this game.

“She shared the ball well, played a fantastic defense, you know, and those free throws she hit at the end were huge.”

Glenwood got 12 points from Maggie McChesney.

The Cyclones boys’ worked from behind but were able to take a 3-pt lead into the halftime locker room.

Unfortunately, they couldn’t slow down the Rams Evan Stanislav, who had 22 pts, including some tightly contested shots down the stretch, to allow his team to pull away late. Harlan Community also got off to a slow start to the 2nd half, getting outscored 18-8 in the 3rd.

Cyclone Coach Dean Mosher liked the fight his team had the contest.

“Had some really good moments there fighting back. They're a good team. We knew that coming in, but it was good to see us fight through it, have some success. Just came up a little short.”

Colton Schnieder had another solid game against Glenwood, scoring 16 pts. He scored 25 against the Rams in two games this season.

“Colton's been great. He's been stepping up defensively and offensively. I coached him in freshman year and started to see the things that I saw back then, taking control, being aggressive offensively and defensively, showing his athleticism and contributing on both sides.”

Dallas McDowell also scored 16 pts for Harlan Community, who’ve now lost five consecutive games for the first time since 2021.
