New Faces Hoping to Bring HC Boys’ Track Similar Results -

(3-12-25) – New season has new faces, but the same goals in mind.

Harlan Community boys’ track comes off a state track record-breaking performance in the 4x100m, but graduations have brought in a new crew of athletes to the Cyclone team.

Coach Sam Brummer likes the potential he sees in his young squad.

“Obviously this year with graduation and things of that nature from last year’s team, we'll look a lot different, but I'm very excited for the youth that we do have. It kind of gives us a reset almost of reestablishing some things.”

But with potential comes patience… and extra work for both athletes and coaches.

“It makes us as coaches kind of go back to the drawing board and do things a little slower than maybe what we've done in years past, because obviously with experience the guys kind of know what to expect,” said Brummer.

One of his returning runners is Hagen Sorensen, who ran for the Cyclones in the Drake Relays and filled in when injuries cropped as the season went along.

“Yeah, I think Hagen's definitely kind of the leader of the sprint group this year, which again, as a junior, is nice because hopefully we'll have him for next year as well to help set the tone.”

The Cyclone boys’ track team will compete at the IATC Indoor Championships in Ames Thursday. Brummer wants his young team to get as much work in as possible in their first competition of the season.

“We'll just look to go up there, try to get as many events in as we can. Obviously, it's all on a qualifying basis, so you're not guaranteed anything. You could run one even, no event or all of them, based on what we kind of submit in.”
